Mr. Curran

Born and raised in Suburban Philadelphia, playwright Mark Wesley Curran admits he has only been to Brooklyn once in his life while driving through the town to get somewhere else. And yet he chose to write the World Premiere play FOREVER BROOKLYN! about Melvin Kaplofkis, a young Jewish man growing up in Brooklyn in the 1950s who, as a kid, entertained his family and friends by telling jokes and stories, longing for success as a comic in the 1960s. Fans of Neil Simon will point to Brighton Beach Memoirs and Broadway Bound, two plays which I assume Mr. Curran used as source material, along with a few early films by Woody Allen, to develop the play's characters and setting rather than writing from his own personal experience.

In January 2017, Utah Opera will present one of the most beloved musical masterpieces of all time, Mitch Leigh's "Man of La Mancha," a tale of the knight errant Don Quixote and his obsessive quest for the impossible dream made famous in Broadway production and on film.

For its fourth New York City concert, Trainor Dance premieres three highly physical and musical pieces by its Artistic Director and choreographer/dancer Caitlin Trainor. With movements as varied as the sound palette, the evening is a well-balanced composition of the modern ballet-hybrid. (See below for program details.)

Composers, Inc. announces the world premiere of a major new chamber opera MIDDLEMARCH IN SPRING by composer Allen Shearer and librettist Claudia Stevens, based on George Eliot's great romantic novel Middlemarch. The production will be featured as a part of the New Work series at Z Space in San Francisco, for four performances only, March 19-22, 2015.

American composer Tobias Picker is presented in OPERA America's Creators in Concert series this season on Wednesday, October 8 at 7 p.m. at the National Opera Center.
