Marc Spitz's REVENGE AND GUILT Begins Performances at Kraine Theatre Tomorrow
Performances of Marc Spitz's REVENGE AND GUILT begin September 19 prior to an official press opening of September 21 at the Kraine Theater (85 East 4th Street, btw 2nd and 3rd Avenues) in Manhattan.
REVENGE AND GUILT will mark Mr. Spitz's directorial debut, the cast of REVENGE AND GUILT is Peter Buck Dettmann, Emily Russell and Tom Vaught.
Like Spitz's early plays, which exploded on the legendary and now bygone strip of theaters along Ludlow Street on the Lower East Side of the late 90s, REVENGE AND GUILT is a violent, sexy, pop savvy farce. It tells the story of Cal (Dettmann), an aging New Yorker with a serious grudge against his teenaged guitar teacher "Major" (Vaught). Cal blames Major and their one disastrous lesson for why he never became a rock star and after life as a loser, he wants payback. Encouraged by his new, kleptomaniac, ex-con girlfriend, Gina (Russell) he tracks down his former instructor (through social media), and learns he's still teaching guitar on Long Island, and that life hasn't exactly gone smashingly for him either. Think an indie rock version of the Don Ciccio scene in The Godfather Part 2.
REVENGE AND GUILT, named for a vintage quote by Elvis Costello ("The only two things that motivate me and that matter to me are revenge and guilt.") - is a new kind of cautionary tale: be careful what you wish for because you might not be able to forget it.
Design and production team for REVENGE AND GUILT is Andrew Diaz (set & prop design), Niki Kanodia (costume design), and Laurel Detkin (stage manager).
In addition to being a dramatist Marc Spitz is also music journalist and author. In 1998, his debut play RETAIL SLUTS premiered on the Lower East Side. He was quickly dubbed the "hipster playwright" by the media and went on to pen over a dozen more plays, such as THE RISE AND FALL OF THE FAREWELL DRUGS, THE HOBO GOT TOO HIGH, I WANNA BE ADORED, SHYNESS IS NICE, THE NAME OF THIS PLAY IS TALKING HEADS, YOUR FACE IS A MESS and more over the next decade. REVENGE AND GUILT marks the first time he is directing his own work.
As a music journalist, Spitz wrote for Spin Magazine (writing cover stories on artists like Weezer, The Strokes, The Killers and Morrissey) Rolling Stone, Maxim, Blender, Nylon, Harp, Vanity Fair, New York Magazine and The New York Times. As an author, Spitz has written several books like We Go the Neutron Bomb: The Untold Story of LA Punk and How Soon Is Never: A Novel. His latest being "Poseur: A Memoir of Downtown New York in the 90s" published by Da Capo Press/Perseus Books earlier this year.
