Youth Music Theatre UK (YMT) is once again launching a nationwide search for the best actors, singers, dancers, musicians and back stage crew to join their company in 2013. Aspiring young performers can book their place for YMT’s 2013 Workshop & Audition Tour online at
www.youthmusictheatreuk.org. YMT, as one of eight National Youth Music Organisations, is supported and recognised by Arts Council England and the Department for Education.
Successful auditionees will work with some of the UK’s leading professional directors, composers and choreographers to stage full scale productions at some of the country’s most respected theatres and arts festivals. They’ll get the chance to learn new skills, make friends and take their first steps in a career in the performing arts. And new for 2013 - participants in YMT musicals will be awarded with Trinity Guildhall's Grade 8 certificates in Musical Theatre!
YMT graduates have gone on to make their mark in the performing arts – in West End musicals, on TV and even in Hollywood blockbusters!
YMT will be auditioning in 21 cities nationwide starting in London at the Lyric Hammersmith on Saturday 12 January with sessions running at 09:30, 12:15 and 15:45. Further London sessions will take place on Saturday 2 and Saturday 23 February.
Auditionees could be cast in one of YMT’s exciting new 2013 productions. These include the world premier of Terry Pratchett’s Soul Music, based on his discworld novel, The Salsa Sisters, directed by Steven Dexter (Loserville, currently playing at the Garrick Theatre in London), the London premiere of a new musical theatre version of Great Expectations at the Rose Theatre Kingston and The Dark Tower a new show which is part of the Benjamin Britten Centenary celebrations. Also, for the first time, YMT will be working with a group of 35 young people to create a new film, shot on location in Plymouth, with BAFTA nominated film company Gamelab.
Youth Music Theatre UK is the country’s national music theatre company for young people, offering top quality training and mentoring and a proven way for young people to enter the creative industries – whether as a performer, musician, stagehand or administrator. Local young people can follow in the footsteps of their recent graduates including chart topping Ed Sheeran, C4 Fresh Meat’s Charlotte Ritchie and TV and West End leading lady Lauren Samuels. And YMT have a great track record of producing hit shows – their 2008 showLoserville is currently playing in the West End of London, starring Eastenders’ Aaron Sidwell and Lil Chris.
Auditions take the form of a Musical Theatre workshop and this is a rare chance to be tutored by some of the leading players in British Theatre. There will be a two and a half hour session of dance/drama/singing workshops led by a professional director, choreographer and musical director. It is definitely not the sort of scary audition you might have seen on TV talent shows – the team will lead a series of practical and fun activities to help make the most of the auditionees time, and to allow them to show the team exactly what their skills are. 2013’s audition team includes director Stuart Harvey (Chichester Festival Theatre) and choreographer Vincent Manna (staff at LAMDA, ex-Ballet Rambert).
After all the auditions have taken place, YMT allocate the most talented performers into one of eight new productions they’ll be putting on across the UK. Around 250 young people are selected and everyone will hear before the end of March 2012.
