PLOT SUMMARY:

Opera diva Maria Callas -- a glamorous, commanding, larger-than-life, caustic, and surprisingly drop-dead funny pedagogue -- is teaching a voice master class. Alternately dismayed and impressed by the students who parade before her, she recalls the glories of her own life and career: including her younger years as an ugly duckling; her fierce hatred of her rivals; the unforgiving press that savaged her early performances; her triumphs at La Scala; her affair with Aristotle Onassis; and the sacrifice we must make in the name of art. Winner of the 1996 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding New Play and the 1996 Tony Award for Best Play, Master Class is Terrence McNally's total triumph. This is a night to remember. (NY Post).

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

MARIA CALLAS
A formidable woman in her late 40s or early 50s. A glamorous, commanding, larger-than-life, caustic, and surprisingly drop-dead funny pedagogue. Light singing. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED VIEWING: Maria Callas' interview(s) with Mike Wallace and/or Barbara Walters. We would like to see people who are familiar with this unique character and who are able to conduct their audition with the flavor of the strong Maria Callas presence.

SOPHIE DE PALMA (First Soprano)

Female, 20s; talented soprano. Sensitive, but courageous. Not afraid to ask questions. Performer must be a strong operatic soprano. Must be able to sing Bellini's Sonnambila aria Ah non credea mirati and able to realistically cry on cue. Vocal Range: Eb4-Ab5.

SHARON GRAHAM (Second Soprano)

Female, 20s; talented soprano. Sensitive, but courageous. Not afraid to ask questions. Works very hard. Must be able to sing Verdi's Macbetto, Lady M's Letter aria. Vocal Range: D4-C6.

ANTHONY TONY CANDOLINO (Tenor)

Male, 20s to early 30s; tenor. Attractive and flirtatious; confident verging on cocky. Serious about becoming an artist. A good listener. Performer must be a strong tenor (and a strong singer in general). Must be able to sing Cavaradossi's first act aria from Puccini's Tosca, Dammi I colori. Vocal Range: F3-Bb4.

MANNY WEINSTOCK (Accompanist)

Male, 20s to early 30s. Accomplished accompanist. Smart, savvy, good-humored. Respects Callas. Performer who can play the piano (and the arias listed above) a plus, but not necessary.

STAGEHAND

Male, age open. A dedicated theatre stagehand.
