PLOT SUMMARY:

Set in the "Polish Tea Room" - the converted ballroom of the N.Y. theater district's Edison Hotel and in reality "Cafe Edison" - Neil Simon focuses his attention on a variety of cafe patrons. We drop in for a brief seasonal visit into the ongoing lives of the cafe owners and their customers over a year's time with Act I's two scenes, "Summer" and "Autumn." Act II catches up with the participants in "Winter" and "Spring." Hotel Edison is far from a Four Seasons Hotel, but the action is genuinely Four Seasons! Tourists, would-be show folk, and Broadway denizens converge for the comfortable pleasures of borscht or cheesecake. The cafe is run by the kind - if gruff - Bernie and Zelda, who hire two separate newcomers, an aspiring actress from Ohio and a struggling playwright from South Africa. Meanwhile, a stand-up Broadway comedian amuses and perplexes his English producer and copes with his sad-sack brother, a sharp-tongued comedienne bides her time at the counter, an elderly couple with delusions of grandeur make their regular entrances, and two suburban playgoers survey the scene. The future of this beloved down-to-earth haven hangs in the balance as the seasons pass, as do the fates of its owners and regulars. Visit

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN:

MICKEY FOX: (About 60) Vigorous and alert, Mickey is a regular customer at the cafe. He is a comedian in the tradition of the Catskill comics of vaudeville days. He makes no attempt to hide the accent he grew up with in the Lower East Side of New York.

ANDREW DUNCAN: (In his 50s) Andrew is a British impresario. He is well-dressed and laughs easily. He tries to engage Mickey in making an appearance on the London stage. Over the course of several seasons, the London show project takes a number of unusual turns.

SOLOMAN MANTUTU: (Approximately 30 - 35) Soloman is an out-of-funds South African playwright. He is soft-spoken, and his manner is educated and most polite. He prides himself on his independence. He seeks a production of his first play: The Shadows of Africa.

BERNIE: (Early 70s) Bernie is co-owner of the cafe with his wife, Zelda. He is a charmer when he wants to be, but he isn't to be trifled with. He is a straight shooter and is strong as an ox. A slight Polish accent flavors his words.

MEGAN WOODS: (In her early 20s) Megan has come to New York to be an actress on Broadway. She is openly sincere, nervous, enthusiastic, and always friendly to all she meets.

ARLENE: (In her late 40s) An avid theater-goer, Arlene attends Broadway shows regularly with her close friend Cindy.

CINDY: (In her late 40s) Semi-regulars to the cafe, Arlene and Cindy keep aware of the always changing and always unique theater scene around them.

RAYLEEN: (Elderly - maybe 60 - 80, she is of indeterminate age) Heavily made-up and bizarrely dressed, Rayleen acts like royalty and exudes an attitude of being from money or high society.

CHARLES BROWNING III: (In his 60s or early 70s) Charles is Rayleen's elderly escort and caregiver. He appears timid and quiet as he lets Rayleen take the stage as she wishes to do.

ZELDA: (Easily 72, but strong and vital) Zelda is Bernie's wife and she runs the cafe. She usually keeps one hand on her hip as she talks. A very feisty woman. Zelda shares the same accent with Bernie.

BESSIE: (About 35 - 40) An African-American comedienne, Bessie is a successful performer - confident and worldly. She is from New York, but will seek her future in Hollywood and not look back.

HARRY FOX: (About 62) Mickey's older brother. He walks, talks and dresses like Mickey. He isn't a Mickey-wanna-be, but he does imitate his famous brother.
