The Hungarian Béla Bartók and the Russian Dmitri Shostakovich were two of the towering figures of twentieth-century music. Both led highly stressful lives, both suffered under repressive political regimes, and both turned out music brimming with fiery emotions and intensity. Bartók's Second Violin Concerto features soloist Tibor Kovác, a section leader of the Vienna Philharmonic second violins since 1992.
