Seeking:

ELLIOT:
Male, Puerto Rican, mid 20s. YASMIN’s cousin, ODESSA’s birth son. An Iraq vet who manages a Subway sandwich shop and scores an occasional modeling or acting gig. His exterior is hard, but his heart is large and his soul is generous—he’s also extremely charming (with a million dollar smile). Secretly fighting an addiction to pain pills, he’s struggling to reconcile with harsh events from his past.

ODESSA(HAIKUMOM):
Female, Puerto Rican, 40ish. ELLIOT’s birth mother. She’s an ex-addict who created and runs a chat room for other ex-addicts (under the handle HAIKUMOM). To those in the chatroom, she’s the mother she couldn’t be to her own kids. Warm, irreverent, funny, kind—but she’s also tough and has a temper. Works odd janitorial jobs, lives one notch above squalor. Her sobriety is still a day-to-day struggle.

YAZMIN:
Female, Puerto Rican, late 20s – early 30s. ELLIOT’s cousin and confidante. An adjunct professor of music at Swarthmore College. Extremely smart, articulate and level-headed. She carries the bulk of the family’s struggles, but she’s also the one who ‘got out’ (and she’s juggling a life separate from them).

CLAYTON(CHUTES&LADDERS):
Male, African American, late 40s–mid 50s. Ex- addict who’s a part of the cyber-community. Average-looking and out of shapewith a dry sense of humor. He keeps his life as steady and simple as possible-- he’s working the same low-level job he’d held at the IRS for decades.

MADELINE(ORANGUTAN):
Female, Japanese by birth, late 20s – early 30s. Another ex-addict, sober for the past few months, who is a part of the chat room. In an attempt to escape her old life, she recently moved from Maine to Japan, where she teaches English (but she’s also searching for her birth parents). Independent, strong, pragmatic—she’s up for the challenge of facing her demons.

JOHN(FOUNTAINHEAD):
Male, Caucasian, late 30s – early 40s. Only a few days sober, he’s the most recent addition to the chat room. Bright, successful, and seemingly confident, he’s a father and husband who’s a computer programmer/entrepreneur who lives on the Main Line in Philadelphia. He’s in major crisis--hiding his coke addiction from his family and struggling to find his identity within the online community.

PROFESSOR AMAN/ GHOST/POLICEMAN:
Male, Middle Eastern, 30s-40s. PROFESSOR AMAN is YAZMIN’s colleague at Swarthmore College. Intelligent & well-traveled. GHOST is the soul of a man who ELIOTT killed in the Middle East. Also plays a Policeman in Japan.
