BREAKDOWN
Now in its sixth year, The Public Theater’s MOBILE SHAKESPEARE INITIATIVE is focused on bringing Shakespeare to non-traditional venues such as prisons, homeless shelters, and centers for disadvantaged youth around the tri-state area. Actors travel by company van and participate in set-up and striking of small scenic elements, props, and costumes. The company will present approximately
six performances per week during the tour. The final three weeks will be played at The Public Theater with eight performances per week, and will be open to the general public.
We are seeking a diverse group of collaborative, language-oriented actors, who enjoy working in a physical style. All actors will play multiple characters.
Especially interested in actors who are comfortable singing a cappella and/or harmonizing in a group.
In this classic tale, given a South Beach spin, Viola, a Cuban refugee, washes up, not on the shores of Illyria, but rather the sun-soaked beaches of Miami in the 1990’s. She disguises herself as a man, and finds employment under Duke Orsino. A complicated love triangle ensues, as identities are confused, acceptance is sought, and lost siblings are reunited.
SEEKING:
VIOLA / and AS CAST:
20s. Female. A Cuban refugee. Bold, courageous, wise, and resilient. A risk-taker. Open–hearted and generous, possessing the kind of charisma that automatically draws everyone to her. Effervescent; brimming with life, and hungry for experience. Flirtatious, wears her sexuality on her sleeve, which becomes complicated when circumstances force her to disguise herself as a man. A role for an actress with strong comedic and dramatic abilities. Must be a confident singer.
SEBASTIAN / CURIO / OFFICER and AS CAST:
20s. Male. To play SEBASTIAN: A Cuban refugee. Viola’s twin brother. Youthful and exuberant, he is mistaken for Cesario, Viola’s male alter-ego. Soulful and sensitive. Shares his sister’s generosity of spirit, and naturally possesses an understated, unassuming charm that draws others to him, evoking feelings of affection and even love from complete strangers. This role will double with other roles, including but not limited to CURIO: a member of Duke Orsino’s staff, and OFFICER: a Miami cop.
ORSINO/SIR ANDREW / and AS CAST:
Late 20’s – 30s. Male. Any ethnicity. To play ORSINO: Duke of Illyria. Regal and good-natured, with a poetic soul. Intense, brooding, sexy. Helplessly in love with Olivia, and determined to do anything to win her affection. This role will double with other roles, including but not limited to SIR ANDREW: Sir Toby’s protégé and a hopeful suitor of Olivia. A party animal. Eccentric, funny, frivolous, and completely unaware of his lack of appeal to woman and men alike. Not the brightest crayon in the box, he doesn’t realize that his “friends” are really only after his booze and money. A role for an actor with full emotional range and strong comedic skills.
OLIVIA / and AS CAST
20s – early 30s. Female. Any ethnicity. A Countess. Regal, attractive and proud, but with a palpable sexuality and molten emotional core that’s just below the surface. Initially unwilling to be vulnerable to the prospect of love, she hides behind her grief for the loss of her brother. But when she does succumb to her feelings, she truly becomes a love-struck fool. Olivia may look like an “ice queen”, but at the right temperature, she melts. A role for an actress with full emotional range and comedic skill, capable of playing extremes. This role will double.
MALVOLIO / and AS CAST
30s. Male. Any ethnicity. Olivia’s Chief of Staff. Intense, reserved, puritanical, and a little old fashioned. Malvolio takes himself very seriously (too seriously perhaps) and is so self-involved that he’s frequently unaware of what’s going on around him. Sticks out like a sore thumb in a community focused on pleasure and parties—he would wear a three piece suit on the beach. His strict devotion to his work and maintaining order causes him to be isolated and misunderstood. It’s completely against his nature to let loose and just have fun. This role will double.
SIR TOBY / and AS CAST
Late 30’s – 40s. Male. Any ethnicity. Full of life and good humor. Very funny, but not without depth and wit. He’s someone who should have outgrown his hard-partying lifestyle long ago, but he won’t let a little thing like age stop him. Over indulgent in all aspects of his life, he can’t resist a good brawl or a good woman. Larger than life in every way. A role for an actor with enormous expanse of humor and heart. This role will double.
FESTE / and AS CAST
Late 20’s+. Any gender. Any ethnicity. A jester with wit, presence, and the ability to wear many hats. Charming, charismatic, playful, and wise. Mischievous. A chameleon of sorts; Feste can travel seamlessly between worlds, equally sought after by the raucous spring break party crowd, as well as by Olivia & Orsino’s staid, highbrow courts. A role for an actor who is very, very funny. This role will double. Must be a strong singer.
MARIA / PRIEST / and AS CAST
30’s+. Female. Any ethnicity. To play MARIA: Olivia’s long time personal assistant. Vivacious, crafty and clever, with a ribald sense of humor. Maria is fun and full of life, but you wouldn’t want to cross her. She figures out how she and Toby can have the life they want within the austere confines of the Olivia’s household. This role will double with other roles, including but not limited to PRIEST: a man of the clergy who officiates Sebastian and Olivia’s wedding.
