Breakdown

JIM HAWKINS: Male. Age 11-15. The industrious son of an innkeeper and protagonist of our story. A young man on the verge of adulthood. He is impulsive, but honest, and with a keen sense of what is wrong and what is right. His journey to self- understanding is one of the real treats of this tale.

JIM’S MOTHER: Female. Age 30’s-50’s. Owner and proprietor of the Admiral Benbow Inn. Hard working and honest. Jim’s father is sickly and dies at the top of the tale, leaving his wife and young son with the burdens of running a modestly successful inn.
DOUBLES WITH:
BEN GUNN: The half-crazed castaway who was marooned on Treasure Island by Captain Flint and his crew of pirates. He befriends Jim Hawkins and becomes a much needed ally against the pirate forces led by Silver.

BILLY BONES: Male. 50’s-60’s. The mysterious, old buccaneer who appears at the Admiral Benbow Inn and takes up residence. In his possession is a locked sea chest that contains the map to Treasure Island. He his rough, gruff and dangerous. He once served under the notorious pirate Captain Flint and is always on guard against the appearance of an old shipmate – a “one-legged pirate”
DOUBLES WITH:
CAPTAIN SMOLLET: The Captain of the schooner Hispaniola – the ship chartered by Squire Trelawny for the expedition. At first the Captain seems bitter and distrustful of the crew put together by the Squire; however, his misgivings are borne out when the bulk of the crew prove to be mutineers and pirates. He becomes the crucial leader when the loyal crew and passengers must fend off the marauding pirates.

DR. LIVESY: Male. 20’s-40’s. A doctor and local magistrate who takes Jim under his wing after the death of Jim’s father. His intelligence, cool-headedness and bravery saves the day in many tight spots with the ruthless pirates.

SQUIRE TRELAWNY: Male. 40’s-50’s. The bombastic and excitable land-owner who Jim turns to when he becomes the possessor of the map to Treasure Island. The Squire bankrolls the entire expedition to find the pirate’s gold. Although very full of himself, he proves himself to be a trustworthy figure…honest and true.

LONG JOHN SILVER: Male. 30’s – 50’s. The penultimate pirate – deceptive, charismatic and corrupted to his core…his one weakness is a genuine affection for Jim Hawkins. He was the Quartermaster alongside Captain Flint and was part of the crew (along with Billy Bones) who amassed the treasure buried on the island. He has one leg and a parrot named Captain Flint that perches on his shoulder.

ISRAEL HANDS: Male. 20’s-40’s. The despicable coxswain on board the Hispaniola who joins with Silver in the mutiny. He forces Jim into a corner, in which the young man must decide to stand his ground or run away.

BLACK DOG & BLIND PEW: Males. 20’s – 50’s. Two former shipmates of Silver and Billy Bones who show up at the Admiral Benbow in the dead of night looking for the precious map to Treasure Island. Disfigured, armed and dangerous.

Actors of all ethnic and racial background are encouraged to audition.
