Breakdown

Strong Singer/Actors of all ages, male and female (including two young boys, age 7-13) for Reading of TO DANCE.

Reading will be presented as part of the TRU Voices New Musicals Reading Series on Monday, February 1 at 7 pm at Baruch Performing Arts Center’s Engelmann Recital Hall (55 Lexington Ave).

PLOT: Set in the USSR and NYC during the Cold War, TO DANCE tells the true story of Valery Panov, a Russian/Jewish ballet dancer who, despite his ethnic background, manages to become the star of the famous Kirov Ballet Company.

SEEKING:

Valery Panov:
(Lead) Male, ages 26-38, Caucasian, Middle Eastern. Tenor.
A premier dancer with the Russian Kirov Ballet. Charismatic, idealistic and ever optimistic, Valery is a man torn between his desire to dance and his longing to receive recognition from his country.

Yuri:
(Supporting) Male, ages 26-39, Caucasian. Tenor.
Principal dancer with Kirov Ballet. Valery's best friend. Shifty, duplicitous, a bit uncomfortable with himself. Actor will also play other small roles.

Volodya:
(Supporting) Male, ages 27-39, Caucasian. Tenor.
A corps dancer. Moody dissi

Volodya:
(Supporting) Male, ages 27-39, Caucasian. Tenor.
A corps dancer. Moody dissident, but with a quiet, dark humor. Actor will also play other small roles.

Rachinsky:
(Supporting) Male, ages 40-60, Caucasian, Hispanic. Baritone.
KGB agent. Cold, fierce, intimidating company man. Actor will also play Clive Barnes (British/American ballet critic) and other small roles.

Galina
(Lead) female, ages 16-30, Caucasian. Soprano.
Up-and-coming dancer. Valey’s second wife. Delicate exterior with an inner strength.

Liya:
(Supporting) Female, ages 25-35, Caucasian, Middle Eastern. Alto.
Valery’s first wife. Corps dancer. Alluring but with little sense of humor. Conservative. Actress will also play other small roles.

Sergeyeva:
(Supporting) Female, ages 60-75, Caucasian. Alto.
A retired ballerina. Strong character, typically Russian, perhaps a little weary. Actress will also play MAMA, Valery's cold mother-in-law and other small roles.

Young Valery:
(Supporting) Male, ages 7 -12. Caucasian, Middle Eastern. Must sing well.
Rambunctious, eager to please, charming.

Young Yuri:
(Supporting) Male, ages 8-14. Caucasian, Middle Eastern. Must sing well.
A bully.
