A note about casting (adopted from language with consent originally created by Kevin Kantor and Emily Traquin of Actors Theatre of Louisville):

Most characters we encounter currently are on the binary and are written with he/him or she/her pronouns and you will see that in the following character descriptions. However limiting the descriptions are, our casting seeks to be inclusive as possible and we invite gender non-conforming, genderqueer, transgender, and non-binary actors to submit for the roles they most identify with. We will also list race/ethnicity when specific to the character but are otherwise seeking all races and ethnicities. Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or if there are any accommodations we can provide.

Actors, singers, dancers, musicians, and/or performers who are 16+ years of age who identify as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Color) to join the ENSEMBLE for a newly devised, multimedia performance, inspired by a call to lift up Black creativity, joy and political power across time and space, that uses music, dance and documentary footage to explore the past, present and future of BIPOC-led protest movements.

This is the embodiment and celebration of African Diasporic storytelling that utilizes the tools that assists us in “unearthing patterns of resistance”, collective healing and liberation including, but not limited to; dance, movement, song and ring shout, African rituals, spiritual practices, and Afrofuturism. Note: the characters are written to reflect the BIPOC experience. All actors of all backgrounds are encouraged to audition/submit.

We are seeking actors with a willingness and/or experience in:

1. Working collaboratively and playfully to create newly devised material/project/script 2. Explore movement as a means to deepen relationships, meaning and subtext to the work 3. Utilize sounds and music to score the process

4. Curiosity and flexibility surrounding text, the spoken and unspoken

5. Remain amenable to shifts and optimistic about the process from beginning to end

EGUA (OFFER PENDING) - Female or Male or Non-Binary identifying ensemble member. They are a warrior who represents the opening and closings, the beginnings and endings. They are the messenger, the gatekeeper who encourages us to move and take action. Containing a trickster energy, they alternate between childlike and grown adult tendencies.

MAYA (OFFER PENDING) - Female identifying ensemble member. She is a mother of all. Fierce, nurturing and protective. You can find her helping in matters of the heart, self-love, emotional wounds, trauma, and healing. Much like water she is the giver of life.

O’SHOON (OFFER PENDING) - Female identifying ensemble member. She radiates love and the fullness of life. She can be soft, but don’t get it twisted. She also possesses vanity, jealousy, and spite.

N’OBA (OFFER PENDING) - Male identifying ensemble member. Father of Earth. The healer. One who demands respect. One who can cure and bring wrath. One who is not to be played with. Even the mere utterance of his name can bring a chill down your spine.

TOYA - Female identifying ensemble member. She is powerful and intellectual. She can be the life of the party or shut the party down. She manifests as winds ranging from the gentlest breeze to the raging hurricane or cyclone.

OLE GOON aka O.G. - Male identifying ensemble member. He is a warrior seeking truth and justice. He is known for his creativity alongside his destructive nature which amounts to the misunderstood nature of his aura.
