Breakdown

The Sundance Institute Theatre Program, a core component of Sundance Institute, champions theatre artists and their plays as a source of vital, challenging and diverse ideas in society. Through the guiding principles of risk-taking, experimentation, and freedom of expression, the Sundance Institute Theatre Program aims to provide developmental opportunities rarely available to contemporary artists, to support these artists throughout their careers, and ultimately to contribute to a meaningful and engaging cultural dialogue between artists and their audiences.

Denia arrives in Chicago, looking to create a place for herself in this unfamiliar land. Monique’s never left Chicago but feels more and more like a stranger in her own home. A chance encounter between them transforms their lives forever in this new play about identity and perception. awe/struck is a commission of the Goodman Theatre.

Latin American girl in her early twenties, strong willed

JULIO
Latino male- 50s/60s. Denia’s father... a man with secrets, broken

DREW
Early 20s. All American perfect white guy…but gay, never been hurt

MONIQUE
Late teens/mid 20s. Crazy hood rat…white, but maybe forgets? Ticking time bomb

LUCY
Late teens/mid 20s. Educated black girl trying not to lose her street cred, evolving
