Do to the nature of this reading. Most characters will be skewed to older side. Ages of some roles will be determined by casting of others due to family relationships.

THE PRINCIPAL CHARACTERS
RICHARD HUNTER (“RAGGED DICK”): 16–mid 20s. Brash and confident, with much charm. Must be exceptional singer-actor.
LUKE GERRISH: Late 30s-early 40s. Amoral, cynical, cunning and dangerous. Attractive to women, and knows it. Baritone.
STACIA-JANE HAUSER: Late 20s-early 30s. Attractive, but not necessarily beautiful. Working class background. Intelligent, though not well educated. Soprano or Chest.
SILAS SNOBDEN: 50s-60s. Business Man. Precise and demanding, but fair, and not unkind. Could be plump, bald, or both. Needs a good character singing voice. This role has been cast with HAL LINDEN.
GIDEON CHAPIN: 40s or 50s. Uptight and mean spirited clerk in Snobden’s store. Conniving and unpleasant. A comic villain.
HIGGINS: age undetermined. Ambitious but weak underling to Chapin. Lightly hysterical at times. Actor should be up to low comedy.
ALLEN CARLISLE: Early 40s. Handsome, likeable. A diamond in the rough; very wealthy now, was once poor.
ROB CARLISLE: 8 years old. Rich banker’s son. Bright, and self confident. Well mannered, not a brat.
FOSWELL: 15-mid 20s. Dick Hunter’s friend, and opposite. Bookish and intelligent, but with no street smarts. A teen-aged Matthew Broderick. (we will be casting this more like in his 20s)
MRS. MOONEY: Late 40s or 50s. Hearty, good natured, shrewd. And very Irish.
MRS. MCHUGH: 50s. Irish Landlady. Addled, disheveled, ditzy. We like her. Sings in a beery way.
MICKEY MAGUIRE: 15-20s. A street tough. In the 1930s he’d have been a Dead End Kid. Clever, selfish, a wise-guy. (We will be casting this more like mid to late 20s)
BUSINESS MEN, WALL STREET BUCKS, CLEANING WOMEN, VENDOR, MRS. CASSIDY, MRS. O’MALLEY, MRS. HALLIWELL, MRS. O’LEARY, OFFICER FITZ – All small roles to be played by members of the Ensemble.

Please prepare two contrasting 32 bar songs from standard repetoire or 32 bars from a song from SHINE and a contrasting song (see breakdown for songs). Bring sheet music in your key; an accompanist will be provided. Bring headshot and resume.
