Breakdown

Archer, mid to late 20s, Asian-American, Trans. - Archer, still 'Angela' to his family, has returned home to Central Oregon to be with his father during what turns out to be a last illness. He is a sensitive, kind person, who has recently moved home from a city where his life was falling apart. He finds himself lost and inarticulate in the face of his befuddled family, and his own confusion and grief. Archer is dealing with overwhelming emotions and forces, from without and from within, and there might be an overlay of stunned hesitancy in his demeanor. He does have some underlying toughness as well, and he has the capacity to be sociable and loving.

Pops, 50s-60s, Asian-American, Cis-Guy. - Pops lives in Central Oregon, with his wife and grown child, on the edge of a Ponderosa pine forest. He is a kind man, grounded and down to earth, who enjoys food, and watching ESPN in the evenings. He has a mild, friendly, non-confrontational demeanor and is the glue that holds his family together. Pops is mortally ill, is quietly supportive to his child Archer. After his death, he also operates the puppet playing the character of Peterson, who is infused with Pops' energy and essence.

Grandma, 60s-80s, Asian-American, Cis-Woman. - Lives in a retirement home. She is close with her family and she spends much of her time brewing love potions and trying to play matchmaker. She is cheerful, devious, energetic. She spends some scenes in solitary, silent physical activity, and requires a precise and charismatic actor who can make these interludes fascinating.

Owen, mid to late 20s, Asian-American, Cis-Man. - Owen is a queer intern at a nature conservancy. He is personable and talkative, projecting a direct friendliness and physical confidence. He is an outdoorsman with a wealth of environmental knowledge and a passion for conservation. He has Native American ancestors and laments that it is too late for him to ask that side of the family the things he is paying to learn in school.

Mom, 50s - 60s, Asian-American, Cis-Woman - A grounded, intelligent, nurturing woman, who finds gratitude in her family, health, and the vegetables she grows in her garden, but her extreme situation does not allow for too much contented glow. Her mortally ill husband, her daughter's new identity overwhelms her. She is full of worry, and she often expresses or releases her anxiety and sorrow with anger. Her journey is through a storm of grief and anger to eventual peace, but it takes a while to arrive at that point.
