Breakdown

On the coast of Cornwall, at the time of Queen Victoria's reign, Frederic celebrates the completion of his 21st year and the end of his apprenticeship to a tender-hearted band of pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love. Frederic soon learns, however, that he was born on the 29th of February, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year. His indenture specifies that he remain apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday and that he must serve for another 63 years. Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic's only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.

The principles do not need English accents, just really good, clean bright speech.

Seeking(* denotes top tier)

*Frederic
A member of the Pirates. He is unaffected, out-going, has great energy, and possesses an unself-conscious sex appeal. Youthful, manly, genuine and innocent. He is funny because he is so sincerely trying to do the honorable thing. Swordplay skills a definite plus, but not required.
Male, Age: 20’s (specified 21 in script), Tenor w/ some lower baritone notes, Vocal range top: G4, Vocal range bottom: Bb2

*Mabel
Daughter of the Major-General. Mabel is a classic beauty similar to Lillian Gish or Mary Pickford. An astute young woman, she is sympathetic in nature and very much a woman of the 19th century. An out-front, uncovered, natural, expressive voice with excellent, unaffected diction. She and Frederic fall in love.
Female, Age: 18 to 21, Coloratura-Soprano, Vocal range top: Db6, Vocal range bottom: Bb3

*Pirate King
The leader of the pirates. Despite his sharp and loud bark, he is actually a whole-hearted romantic with a soft bite. He and his crew are rather like barking dogs who love the barking but are ready to run away if things get serious. He is hurt and dumbfounded that Frederic would leave the romantic life for “respectability.” A handsome man typically found with an open shirt and wind in his hair. Must move very well –and with great flair. Swordplay skills a definite plus, but not required.
Male, Age: 30-45, Baritone, Vocal range top: F4, Vocal range bottom: A#2

*Major-general
A father with many daughters. He resembles a male Queen Victoria in his sensibilities. He is respectability. Possesses the kindness, warmth, and good-humor of Santa Claus, while being believably quirky. The love for his daughters is undeniable. Must be able to deliver I Am the Very Model of a Modern Major-General at breakneck speed. May have an English accent.
Male, Age: 55 to 65, Baritone, Vocal range top: E4, Vocal range bottom: Bb2

*Ruth
Frederic's lifelong nanny. A proper, sneaky Mrs. Potts, she is attractive enough for her age but cares very little about such things. She wants nothing more in life than to see Frederic happy, healthy, and by her side. It is from her that Frederic learned to be so polite, honorable, to cherish respectability, and to give himself so wholly and immediately to love. The feelings between Ruth and Frederic are the deep feelings of a mother and son.
Female, Age: 40’s-50’s , Contralto/Mezzo, Vocal range top: Eb5, Vocal range bottom: G3

*Sergeant
The leader of the police. He is Groucho Marx-esque and uncomfortably clumsy. Though their duty to protect is clear, the Sergeant and his police are more accustomed to fear and hide. Must be a superb dancer. May have a lower-class English accent, but not necessary.
Male, Age: 35 to 45, Baritone, Vocal range top: E4, Vocal range bottom: G2

Kate
Daughter of the Major-General. Quick-witted and rather sassy. She, like her other sisters, is strikingly beautiful.
Female, Age: 17 to 21, Soprano, Vocal range top: G5, Vocal range bottom: Ab3

Edith
Daughter of the Major-General. Though a level-headed girl, she is quite mischievous. Very beautiful and the eldest of the daughters.
Female, Age: 20 to 25, Soprano, Vocal range top: G5, Vocal range bottom: Ab3

Samuel
The Pirate King's right-hand man. Perhaps a bit rotund, Samuel is clever but easily manipulated and influenced.
Male, Age: 35 to 45, Baritone, Vocal range top: F4, Vocal range bottom: Bb2
