TORIL GRANDAL. Norwegian. 30s- 50’s. Female. Housekeeper and cook at Borregaard Castle. Roughhewn and ruddy cheeked, her English is rough but her enthusiasm and warmth are copious. She is the master of the domicile and takes fierce pride in her cooking prowess. NOTE: role may be double cast.

AHMED QURIEP. Palestinian. 50’s. Male. A great and formidable man, full of passion and speechmaking. Rabelaisian in his appetites and operatic in his emotions. He has a volcanic temper that he uses to his advantage. Not an intellectual and defensive about that. Immensely charming, intensely clever.

URI SAVIR. Israeli. Mid 40’s – Mid 40’s. Male. The wonder boy of Israeli politics. Loves NYC, jazz, besting others in argument, and showing off his ballroom dancing. He can flip from charm to cold ruthlessness on a dime. Speaks many languages; a brilliant mind. Competitive as the day is long.

HASSAN ASFOUR. Palestinian. 30’s - Late 40’s. Male. A hardline Communist; cold, unbending, he speaks as infrequently as he can. He is full of anger and slashing words and a walking compendium of the history of the Middle East and its grievances.

YOSSI BEILIN. Israeli. Mid 30’s - Mid 40’s. Male. Israel’s boyish, earnest George Stephanopoulos (when he was in the White House with Clinton). Friendly, excited, passionate…seems so nice until he has to lower the boom. NOTE: role may be double cast.

JOEL SINGER. Israeli. 40’s. Male. Twenty-year veteran of the Israeli Defense Force who’s a partner now in a law firm in NYC. He’s often bad cop to Uri Savir’s good one. Sharp as hell and knows it. NOTE: role may be double cast.

YAIR HIRSCHFELD. Israeli. 40’s. Male. A professor. Earnest and passionate and out of his depths in these negotiations but willing to risk all. Very smart, a bit shy. NOTE: role may be double cast.

RON PUNDAK. Israeli. 30’s. Male. A professor as well. The academic Hardy to Hirschfeld’s Laurel. He’s garrulous and fun-loving—often too much so. NOTE: role may be double cast.

JAN EGELAND. Norwegian. 30’s-40’s. Male. The golden boy of the Norwegian foreign service and Mona’s former lover in college. Okay political chops but has great hair. Smart but vain. NOTE: role may be double cast.

THOR BJORNEVOG. Norwegian. 30’s-40’s. Senior officer with the Norwegian Secret Service. Hired by Terje and Mona to be completely immersed in all the activities scheduled for the weekend. Discrete, confident, intelligent, and with a good sense of humor, he approaches the task at hand with full gusto. NOTE: role may be double cast.

FINN GRANDAL. Norwegian. 50’s-E60’s. The grounds keeper at Borregaard Castle. Toril's slower, and very taciturn husband. Speaks very little English. A man who prefers to keep quiet and make and do things with his hands. NOTE: role may be double cast.

TERJE LARSEN Norwegian. 40’s. Male. Mona’s husband (and, back in the day, her professor in school). A dynamic, charming, raconteur; Norway’s answer to Noel Coward, if the latter went into politics. The crazier things get, the more joyous it is for him. A true intellectual who’s charm dazzles.

JOHAN JORGEN HOLST. Norwegian. 50’s-60’s. Male. The soon to be Foreign Minister of Norway and Mona’s boss. Like, say, John Kerry: at the end of a long and distinguished career and loves to hear the sound of his own voice. NOTE: role may be double cast.

MISS AGATHA TRUNCHBULL. Vocal High baritone with a strong F sharp. Male. 40s – 50s. Physicality: 6’ plus. Dialect: Heightened RP.
Miss Trunchbull, a former Olympic hammer-throwing champion, is now the terrifying, tyrannical headmistress of Crunchem Hall Prep School. A physical character actor - there are physical demands of this role; physical fitness is crucial. Ribbon Dance and Vaulting may be required.

MISS JENNIFER HONEY. Vocal Soprano up to Bb, with a strong and solid belt up to D. 20s - 30s. Female. Dialect: RP
Miss Honey is the kindergarten teacher at Crunchem Hall, a light in the lives of her students, especially Matilda. A mild, quiet person who never raises her voice and seldom seems to smile - yet possesses the rare gift of being adored by every small child under her care. She should have a curious warmth that is almost tangible. NOTE: May be played by a woman of non-Caucasian heritage.

MR. WORMWOOD. Top A to f#. 30s - early 40s. Male. Dialect Essex / Estuary / East London
A weasley or ratty essence. A dealer in second-hand cars - a mean crooked crook - with a penchant for wearing jackets with large, brightly colored checks. Should ideally be a clown and could have an ex-punkish rocker voice. Dance not required but needs to be agile.

MRS. WORMWOOD. Up to top F/G – with higher ad libs / strong belt, with matching vocal stamina. 30s. Female. Dialect: Essex / Estuary / East London.
Mother of Michael and Matilda, and the wife of Mr. Wormwood. She is obsessed with her amateur Ballroom dancing partner and her looks. Like her husband she thinks very little of Matilda’s unique abilities and often berates her. She is as loud in her makeup and dress sense as she is in her voice – must have strong comedy. Strong understanding of movement.

MRS. PHELPS. Accomplished singer. 30s - 50s. Female. Dialect: RP, or possibly African or Caribbean. Warm and nurturing local librarian who encourages Matilda’s love of reading. She has an inner peace. Basic movement skills. NOTE: Appears as a parent in Miracle.

NOTE: All cast employed acknowledge that they will be working with children in this production of MATILDA THE MUSICAL. Please note that the Producer has developed a Children’s Care Policy. Compliance with the Northern Stage Children's Care Policy will be mandatory at all times.
