ALL ROLES ARE CAST. Actor will be considered for possible replacement if needed

RAY
(role CAST) 38. Korean-American. Born here. Doesn't speak Korean. Acerbic, sarcastic, thinks with his gut. Not one to dwell on uncomfortable or sad thoughts, he likes to stay in motion and keep busy. A guy's guy, he would rather smoke in the back with his friends than talk about feelings. He likes grubby food and is unpretentious, sharp and competitive.

LUCIEN
(role CAST) Late 40s-early 50s. Male. West African. A naturalized citizen who came as a refugee. He works as a hospice nurse. He is no-nonsense, matter-of-fact. But he is kind, experienced and comfortable with death as well as with the outsized emotions of those dealing with death.

CORNELIA
(role CAST) 28. Korean-American. Born in Korea, raised mostly in America. Fluent in Korean and English. Sharp and tough, she is intimidating. But her hard exterior covers (what else?) a soft side. She's a romantic in the guise of a ball-buster.

STRANGER/UNCLE
(role CAST) Late 50s and 40s. Korean. Speaks only Korean. An old bachelor. Kindly, warm-hearted. A bit eccentric. He is earthy, a little rough around the edges.

DIANE
(role CAST) 40. American. Affluent (and not entirely comfortable with it), liberal, well-traveled. She’s affable and warm, with a self-deprecating sense of humor. Has a quality of sadness or lostness that comes out in the briefest glimpses. Also plays VOICE

RAY’S FATHER
(role CAST) 50s and 60s. Born in Korea, lived in America for over four decades. An aloof, reserved man who has trouble showing emotion.

A LIFE

40s- 50s Female. Plays more than one role, including Nate's sister from Milwaukee who is a bit overwhelmed by the city; and a medical examiner who is all business and not sentimental about the bodies of the dead people she examines.

30s. Female. Plays more than one role, including a mortician's assistant. Chatty and very interested in her own life. Has edge. Working class.

(role CAST) Male. Mid-30s. An electrician who works for Steele MacKaye.

(role CAST) Female. Early 30s. ADELINE - A turn-of-the-century spitfire. From a wealthy family. Married to Hillary. RUTH - Housewife, mother and Pancake Pavilion worker at the 1933 World's Fair. Bears a striking resemblance to Adeline.

40's-50's. Married to Naja. A first-generation immigrant novelist from the Middle East/North Africa/South Asia. Brilliant and intimidating. gruff, smart, a bit arch, and totally Westernized. A highly cultured, flexible intellect matched by a fierce certainty and love of his family.

NAJA
40's-50's. Married to Raif. A first-generation immigrant from the Middle East/North Africa/South Asia. A former prima ballerina, now a dance instructor - soulful, intelligent, graceful, and long suffering.

EMINA
21. Raif and Naja's younger daughter. A college student - willful, smart, and in love.

AISA
25. Raif and Naja's eldest daughter. A modern dancer moonlighting as a bartender - cynical, sharp-tongued, sexy, damaged. Also plays DANIA: Peter and Carmen's daughter.

PETER OSMAN
40's-50's. Married to Carmen. A business owner, and a more recent immigrant to the U.S from the Middle East/North Africa/South Asia. He is gregarious, funny, and sincere in his hard-won beliefs.

CARMEN
40's-50's. Married to Peter. A more recent immigrant to the U.S. from the Middle East/North Africa/South Asia. Reserved, traditional, but willing to bend the rules for the sake of her children.

ALOYSIUS T. HUNNICUTT
20. African-American. Hot-tempered, proud, ambitious, hunk of a Mississippi boy. Bella’s betrothed. A righteous man with a righteous plan: see some fighting action, gain some capital, get some land, get hitched to the proper wife and become king of his personal hill. Bass/Baritone

NATHANIEL BECKWORTH
20. African-American. Railroad porter. Formerly an intrepid adventurer, he’s settled down to a relatively secure life of railroad employment. His life experience has made him a bit pessimistic, but his pragmatism, decency and kindness make him the type of guy you can depend on. Tenor.

BONNY JOHNNY RAKEHELL/ SNAGGLETOOTH HOSKINS
Mid to Late 30’s. Caucasian. A member of the Southern aristocracy, Bonny Johnny is a handsome charming fun-loving, foppish Southern fried villain. Believes the world is his oyster, and every woman in it is his for the taking. Snaggletooth Hoskins is a lowdown dirty rotten train robbing outlaw with a disgusting tendency to spit. Tenor

TOMMIE HAW
30’s. Asian. Wealthy cattle baron. Handsome and friendly, his natural gregariousness is stifled by his solitary cattle ranching life. To dispel the loneliness, he sings and talks with his cattle and the other animals of the prairie, making him a type of country-western Orpheus. Baritenor

GABRIEL CONYERS
20. Caucasian. Circus performer. Younger brother of circus owner CP Conyers. The actual financial brains behind the circus operation, Gabriel sacrifices himself to his brother’s verbal and physical abuse in order to deflect it away from the other sideshow performers. A lack of self-confidence causes him to stutter. Tenor/ Baritenor

IDA LOU SIMPSON/ AUNT DINAH
Mid 30’s. African-American. Ida Lou is a pretty widow with a newborn baby, migrating from the South to Kansas. Lost her husband to nightrider terrorism. Heartsick, frightened but strong-willed. Also plays Aunt Dinah, an attractive wise-cracking woman who is shrewdly pragmatic about sharing her favors with powerful men in her life, in order to secure benefits for her beloved, powerless family. Soprano/ Mezzo

GUSSIE MAE CABBAGESTALK/ MAMA
Mid 30’s. African-American. Bitter, defensive, disheartened mail order bride. Her life’s been nothing but a hellish sequence of orphanages, workhouses and employers who pay her a pittance while sexually harassing her. No one can get past the hard shell of her experience to reach her fiercely guarded heart...or so she thinks. Also plays Bella’s mother. Soprano

DIEGO MORENO/ CP CONYERS
Early 20’s-30’s. Latino/Hispanic. Wayfaring cowboy of Spanish and African blood, descended from the pobladores, founders of the city of Los Angeles, California. A carefree spirit, with a poetic, romantic soul and an unerring eye for hidden beauty. Dynamic, persuasive, he grabs life and anything else he wants with gusto. Also plays CP Conyers, an unprincipled circus owner. Tenor

OLD MAN
40. African-American, Native American, Latino. Male tribal leader, with striking, compelling features. A guardian/ oracle/spirit that will forever occupy the land even after the community’s physical presence has been wiped away. Tenor

YOUNG GIRL
18. Native American, Latino, or African-American. Ghost of an average cute little kid. Her ebullient personality makes her a coddled family favorite. She is suddenly faced with a traumatic life changing situation which has leached her soul of all joy. Soprano

GRANNY
Mid 40’s. African-American. The young grandmother of Bella…strong willed and sometimes forgetful… should be voluptuous and engaging. Also plays the personification of Bella’s Booty. Soprano/ Mezzo
