Breakdown
Circle Theatre' second show of their 34th season will be the North Texas premiere of Lauren Gunderson's award-winning play, I and You. Anthony arrives unexpectedly at classmate Caroline's door, carrying a beat-up copy of Walt Whitman’s poetry and an urgent assignment from their English teacher. Homebound due to illness, Caroline hasn't been to school in months, but she is as quick and sardonic as Anthony is athletic, sensitive, and popular. When these two let down their guard and share their secrets, this seemingly mundane poetry project unlocks the much deeper mystery that brought them together.
Anthony (Male: 17, African American):
He is neat, poised, mature for his age. He's an A student, a team player, a nice guy. He's not really great around girls. He takes his homework very seriously.
Caroline (Female: 17, White):
She is sick but doesn't look terribly ill, just weak and frumpy. She doesn't go out. She is cynical, over it, does not let a stray feeling near the surface.
*NOTE - The race of each character can be altered with slight adjustment to the text. The only essentiality is that the characters not be the same race.
