Breakdown

BUZZER is a darkly funny, intensely gripping new play about love, fear and the high costs of choosing who we make a home with, and where. When Jackson and his girlfriend, Suzy, buy an apartment in the newly gentrifying Brooklyn neighborhood where he grew up, Suzy isn’t so sure she belongs in a community “on the verge.” Don, Jackson’s high school best friend and an ex-addict in recovery, comes to crash with them, and his presence collides with the growing disconnect between Jackson and Suzy, and the sexual and racial tensions both inside the apartment and on the streets below.

SEEKING:

JACKSON.
Late 20s. Male. African-American. Smart, ambitious, proud, and stubborn. Intensely loyal. Harvard educated corporate litigator on track to become partner. Idealistic and torn between seeing possibility and seeing reality. Having grown up in a rough neighborhood, he’s proud to have made something of himself, but still haunted by the bullying he experienced as a child who was always somewhat of an outsider even in his own neighborhood. Searching for a way to pursue his future without ignoring his past.

SUZY.
Late 20s. Female. Caucasian. Smart, funny, sexy, tough, and passionate. High school math teacher at a rough inner city school. Loves her job and her students even though she is often frustrated by them. Grew up working class. Independent. A feminist. Has lofty aspirations and tries to stand by her beliefs, but is sometimes led astray by her emotions.

DON.
Late 20s. Male. Caucasian. Handsome, charming, funny, charismatic, and sexy. A recovering heroin addict. Born into wealth and status, but rejected his family and their values at an early age, finding himself more at home in Jackson’s neighborhood than his own. Street savvy and witty. Thrives on excitement and finds some thrill in making mistakes. Struggling between fixing his life and relationships and continuing to behave in the only way he has ever really known.
