Breakdown
Director Jessica Stone takes audiences on a hilarious romp through Ancient Rome with an all-male troupe of actors lead by Christopher Fitzgerald as Pseudolus, a slave who tries to win his freedom by playing matchmaker for his innocent young master. We’re seeking a diverse cast of inventive and comedic men to play everything from old men to sexy courtesans to Roman soldiers and everything in between.
SEEKING the following:
HYSTERIUM
Male, 20’s to 50’s. ANY ETHNICITY. Frequently frantic and always anxious, Hysterium not only sees the glass half empty, he’s convinced that the glass will break and hurt everyone and he’ll be blamed. Ostensibly the head of the slaves in Senex’s household, Hysterium is an excellent groveler but too panicky to handle control well. Ultimately loyal and good-hearted, he’s happy to go along with whoever has a better plan (usually Pseudolus), no matter how ridiculous it may be. Must be a fantastic comedian. Vocal description: Strong character singing voice.
SENEX / VIBRATA
Male, L30’s to 50’s. ANY ETHNICITY. SENEX is the head of the family only in name, he isn’t the Paterfamilias he likes to think he is. Distinctly subordinate to his powerful (and frankly a little bit frightening) wife, Domina, and not entirely respected by his slaves, he has a wandering eye for nubile young ladies, but doesn’t quite have the courage to go after them. This part doubles with one of those nubile young ladies, VIBRATA, a courtesan as fierce and lithe as a tigress. Must be a fantastic comedian. Vocal description: Comfortable character singing voice.
MARCUS LYCUS
Male, 20’s to 50’s. ANY ETHNICITY. A buyer and seller of the flesh of beautiful women, Lycus is a shrewd businessman and a skilled salesman who knows exactly how to entice customers. Quick-witted and eminently adaptable, he can be a good friend – but he’s a better friend to whoever can pay. Must be a fantastic comedian. Vocal description: Comfortable character singing voice.
HERO / ROMAN SOLDIER
Male, 20’s to 30’s. ANY ETHNICITY. HERO is the son of a prominent family in Rome, just coming into his manhood. Innocent and big-hearted but not wise in the ways of the world, Hero will do anything to win the maiden he has fallen instantly in love with – but he’ll need his slave, Pseudolus, to figure out the details. Will also play a ROMAN SOLDIER. Vocal description: Vocal description: Strong tenor or baritenor voice.
DOMINA / PANACEA
Male to play 2 female roles, 30’s to 50’s. ANY ETHNICITY. A fearsome woman with an effortless authority and a strong hand, Domina is the true head of her household. She has little patience for incompetence and no discernable sense of humor, but under the steel exterior hides a secret soft side and great love for the husband she frequently badgers. This part doubles with PANACEA, a sexy courtesan. Must be a fantastic comedian. Vocal description: Powerful, dramatic voice.
ERRONIUS/ COURTESAN (either TITINABULA or GEMINAE twin)
Male, 20’s to 50’s. ANY ETHNICITY. ERRONIUS is an elderly and befuddled man who longs to be reunited with the twin children he lost track of as infants, and who will run in circles (literally) to get them back. Will double as either GEMINI #2, one of a pair of enticing and coordinated courtesans or TITINABLUA, an exotic and flexible courtesan. Must have impeccable comic timing. A physical chameleon who can play extreme age and then also move/dance well as a sexy woman. Must be a fantastic comedian. Vocal description: Comfortable character singing voice.
PROTEAN #2 / COURTESAN (either TITINABULA or GEMINAE twin)
Male, 20’s to 30’s. ANY ETHNICITY. Acrobatic and versatile, the Proteans are called upon to play many roles. A skilled dancer and adaptable comedian. Will double as a female courtesan: either GEMINI #2, one of a pair of enticing and coordinated twins or TITINABLUA, an exotic and flexible courtesan. Strong voice.
PROTEAN #3 / GYMNASIA
Male, 20’s to 30’s. ANY ETHNICITY. Acrobatic and versatile, the Proteans are called upon to play many roles. A skilled dancer and adaptable comedian. This part doubles with the female courtesan GYMNASIA, a large and exotically beautiful acrobat, so height is a plus but most important is tumbling skill. Strong voice.
