The National to Play Louisville's Iroquois Amphitheater, 9/13

Slowly, inexorably growing from underground indie troubadours to the powerful but forlorn voice of a grown-up generation, The National is a band with a very clear, heartfelt message and a sound that is part social angst and part personal longing. The National have locked up their place in the music world with songs that are searingly honest and heart-achingly real.

Formed in 1999, the Ohio-raised, Brooklyn-based band consists of vocalist Matt Berninger fronting two pairs of brothers, Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar), and Scott (bass, guitar) and Bryan Devendorf (drums). Their first full-length CDs, The National and Sad Songs For Dirty Lovers preceded their signing to Beggars Banquet in 2004. Boxer (2007), featuring songs like "Fake Empire," "Mistaken For Strangers" and "Start A War," sold over three times as many copies as its predecessor and saw the band transformed from underground stars into an indie rock institution.

Scottish alternative rockers Frightened Rabbit, based in Glasgow, are known for their unique pop/rock ballads with a restless charm and racing guitar lines.
