Pat Metheny Unity Group to Play Capitol Theatre, 3/13
Pat Metheny's versatility is nearly without peer on any instrument. Over the years, he has performed with artists from Herbie Hancock to David Bowie in a body of work that includes compositions for solo guitar, small ensembles, electric and acoustic instruments, large orchestras, and ballet pieces in settings ranging from modern jazz to rock to classical. In his latest project, the Pat Metheny Unity Group, Metheny has assembled a group of multi-instrumental musicians that are as talented as they come-Antonio Sanchez, Chris Potter, Ben Williams, and Giulio Carmassi-to form a platform that can cover the entire spectrum of his 40-plus-year career and enable him to further integrate his concept of orchestration.
CAPA presents the Pat Metheny Unity Group at the Capitol Theatre (77 S. High St.) on Thursday, March 13, at 8 pm. Tickets are $30-$75 at the CAPA Ticket Center (39 E. State St.), all Ticketmaster outlets, and www.ticketmaster.com. To purchase tickets by phone, please call (614) 469-0939 or (800) 745-3000.
This performance is made possible through the generous support of 2013-14 CAPA season sponsor American Airlines.
Born into a musical family, Metheny started on trumpet at the age of 8, and switched to guitar at age 12. By the age of 15, he was working regularly with the best jazz musicians in Kansas City, receiving valuable on-the-bandstand experience at an unusually young age.
Metheny first burst onto the international jazz scene in 1974. Over the course of his three-year stint with vibraphone great Gary Burton, the young Missouri native already displayed his soon-to-become trademarked playing style which blended the loose and flexible articulation customarily reserved for horn players with an advanced rhythmic and harmonic sensibility-a way of playing and improvising that was modern in conception but grounded deeply in the jazz tradition of melody, swing, and the blues.
