Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra Announces Full Schedule for Concert Season

Oakland, CA, April 6, 2016-The Oakland Symphony and Music Director Michael Morgan have announced the 2016-2017 season, which will feature a signature mix of adventurous and wide-ranging music including a new violin concerto, a monumental choral work, a "lost" Romantic symphony, a trio as guest soloists, music from the time of the Black Panthers, an ebullient American musical theater gem and more. The six-concert season runs October 14, 2016, through May 19, 2017, at the Paramount Theatre with pre-concert talks, lobby entertainment and drinks beginning one hour before each performance. In addition, the organization has announced details of the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra's three-concert 2016-2017 season. "From Red States, Blue States (on Opening Night) to Music from the Era of the Black Panthers (December) to Notes from Native America (February) this season's music connects the orchestra to current events as well as the history of our community," says Maestro Morgan. "A symphony orchestra can shine a light on the past and the present, while our collaboration with our Youth Orchestra shows us the future."

Opening Night
Friday, October 14, 2016, 8pm

Bass-baritone Hadleigh Adams performs Mahler's Rückert Lieder and Delphi Trioperforms Paul Juon's Episodes Concertantes Op. 45. The concert also features Clark Suprynowicz's Red States, Blue States and Elgar's In the South. Opening night is sponsored, in part, by Wells Fargo.

Lost Romantic Symphonies
Friday, November 18, 2016, 8pm

Violinist Kelly Hall-Tompkins will perform the U.S. premiere of Siegfried Matthus'new violin concerto, Dream of a Summer Night, along with John Williams' Theme from Schindler's List and Fiddler on the Roof. The program also includes Joachim Raff's rarely performed Symphony No. 3 and the Oakland Symphony Youth Orchestra, back from its Cuban Tour, will join the Symphony for Gershwin's Cuban Overture. The concert is sponsored by The Grubb Company.

Including a Tribute to Music from the Era of the Black Panthers

2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Black Panthers and an important time in Oakland's history. Oakland Symphony will pay homage by performing music from the time including Motown classics, gospel and protest music of the 60's & 70's. In recent years, the annual Let Us Break Bread Together non-traditional holiday tradition has evolved to include tributes to those who have made a difference and will feature Oakland Symphony Chorus alongside guest choruses and more.
Notes from Native America

Oakland Symphony's commitment to the diverse community in Oakland continues as it introduces audiences to the music of Native America, program to be announced. The concert will include Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9 among other selections.

Bruckner & Bernstein
Friday, March 31, 2017, 8pm

Soprano Hope Briggs will be guest soloist for Bruckner's Te Deum alongside the Oakland Symphony Chorus. The evening's program will also include Bernstein'sFacsimile (Choreographic Essay) and nationally-recognized Berkeley-born composer Gabriela Frank's Concertino.

Guys & Dolls in Concert

The American Masterworks series returns to close out the season with the

exuberant music from Frank Loesser's iconic musical, Guys and Dolls.
