Hollywood Bowl favorite Nicholas McGegan leads the LA Phil at the Hollywood Bowl in two concerts of the Classical Tuesday and Classical Thursday series, Tuesday, August 21, and Thursday, August 23, at 8pm.

On Tuesday, British trumpeter Alison Balsom makes her Bowl debut with the Trumpet Concerto in the all-Haydn program that includes Symphony No. 30, “Alleluia,” Overture to Windsor Castle and Symphony No. 103, “The Drumroll.” Thursday’s concert presents the Bowl debut of violinist Henning Kraggerud, who performs Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 in D. Also on Thursday’s program are Symphony No. 32 in G, K.318, Chaconne from Idomeneo and Symphony No. 39 in E-flat, K.543.

Nicholas McGegan is loved by audiences and orchestras for performances that match authority with enthusiasm, scholarship with joy, and curatorial responsibility with evangelical exuberance. The London Independent calls him “one of the finest Baroque conductors of his generation” and The New Yorker lauds him as “an expert in 18th-century style.” Through 26 years as its music director, McGegan has established the San Francisco-based Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra and Philharmonia Chorale as the leading period performance ensemble in America - and at the forefront of the 'historical' movement worldwide thanks to notable appearances at Carnegie Hall, the London Proms, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and the International Handel Festival, Göttingen where he was artistic director from 1991 to 2011.

Acclaimed trumpeter Alison Balsom—recently crowned ‘Female Artist of the Year’ for the second time at the Classic BRITs—has cemented an international reputation as one of classical music’s great ambassadors and is ranked among the most distinctive and ground-breaking musicians on the international circuit today. Balsom has also been honored with numerous awards by Gramophone, Classic FM and ECHO Klassik. Her most recent CD, entitled Alison Balsom, brings together 16 of her finest recordings from her 10 years as an exclusive EMI Classics recording artist.

Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud is an artist of exquisite musicianship, who combines an unusually sweet tone and beauty of expression with impressive virtuosity, drawing audiences and critics alike towards the genuine quality of his playing. In summer 2010 he gave a critically-acclaimed performance at the BBC Proms with the Danish National Symphony under Thomas Dausgaard, and a highly successful season followed including concerts with the Hallé Orchestra, the Bergen Festival, the West Australian and Tasmanian Symphony orchestras, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and a recital at New York’s Lincoln Center. A favorite with U.S. audiences, Henning has worked previously with the Detroit Symphony under Peter Oundjian and the Seattle Symphony under Vassily Sinaisky among others, and in the 2011/12 season returned to the Cincinnati Orchestra as well as performing as soloist and conductor with both the Pacific and Vancouver Symphony orchestras.
