Paulo Afonso De Lima Paulo Afonso de Lima lives in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil,where he has been
for more than thirty years a recognized Theatre Director and Drama
Teacher. Mr. Lima has directed more than seventy plays and musicals in
his Country, including HAMLET, FAUSTO by Goethe, THE DRESSER by Ronald
Harwood, HUGHIE by O'Neill, SONDHEIM TONIGHT (the first time the work
of Stephen Sondhein was presented to a Brazilian audience),FRED AND
JUDY-THE SONGS OF GARLAND AND ASTAIRE, GARDEL-O MUSICAL, WHITE NIGHTS
- a theatrical adaptation of Dostoievsky work, AMERIKA ( a musical
piece on Kafka famous book with music of George Gershwin and Scott
Joplin), LES MISERABLES ( not the musical but the staight adaptation
of Victor Hugo work by French playwright Guy LaForret, with more than
seventy actors. This production was also staged by Mr. Lima in
Portugal with a Portuguese cast), A FALECIDA by Nelson Rodrigues (the
most important Brazilian playwright), OEDIPUS by Sophocles, as well as
university productions of CABARET, FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, STEEL PIER,
DANCING IN THE DARK ( a musical approach for the stage of Lars Von
Thiers motion picture - music by Björk),THE BLUE ANGEL by Pam Gems and
recently, SWEENEY TODD (among many others), all of them at CAL, the
most famous drama school in Brazil. Mr Lima is recipient of many
Brazilian theatre awards in his career and in 1983 was invited by the
U.S. Government to visit during one year many American theatre
centers. About the staging of THE DRESSER, Mr Harwood (in Rio de
Janeiro for the opening night) declared to Brazilian newspapers : "Mr.
Lima approach to my play has a theatricality that, in more than fifty
productions worldwide, I have never expected to find. Bravo!". Paulo
Afonso de Lima is a contant researcher of the evolution of the Musical
Theatre in America, in his Country and in the whole world. His book A
BROADWAY É AQUI (Broadway is Here) about the amazing increase of the
American Musical Theatre among Brazilian audience, will reach
Brazilian bookstores later this year.

HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING (Como Vencer na Vida sem fazer Forca) opened in Rio de Janeiro with a revised Brazilian production, directed by top musical theatre directors Claudio Botelho and Charles Moeller. Mr. Botelho and Mr. Moeller will soon reach the London West End and Broadway with BLACK ORPHEUS, produced by American producer Stephen C. Byrd. HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING is the 32nd show in their winning careers. Chiquinha Gonzaga, (1847/1935) was the first woman to compose for the musical theatre in Brazil. Chiquinha was an active citizen, involved in all kinds of social movements that took place during her age in Brazil, such as the Abolition of Slavery and even the Republican movement. Chiquinha is most known for her works for the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro, such as Ó Abre Alas, and theatrical composition as FORROBODÓ, which opened at the begining of the last century, on 11th June, 1912. The show had an extraordinary run of 1500 performances. Next month FORROBODÓ will be revived ( the opening night will be tonight, 11th, June, 2012) with a new production in Rio de Janeiro, brought by Thiago Cantarelli and Vitavision Audiovisual Ltda, with the Musical Direction of Roberto Carelli, also in charge for the new orchestration of the score (based on Gonzaga's originals).

Due to the fabulous increase of Musical Theatre productions in Brazil, CAL-Casa das Artes de Laranjeiras, the most famous Drama School and Theatrical Research Institution in the Country, located in the middle of the amazing Rio de Janeiro forest, opened a program of several Musical Theatre workshops called MUSICAL THEATRE DIVE (MERGULHO NO MUSICAL). The project is directed by Mirna Rubim, a distinguished Brazilian singer and actress (THE SOUND OF MUSIC, LA CAGE AUX FOLLES) with the colaboration of Menelick de Carvalho.
