DAMES AT SEA, the classic Off-Broadway musical spoof of Ruby Keeler/Busby Berkeley movie musicals of the 1930s taps its way to a Broadway debut this season, with previews beginning September 24th at the Helen Hayes Theatre.

As a Throwback Thursday treat, the Dames at Sea Twitter page sent fans this vintage photo of the musical's original star, Broadway legend Bernadette Peters.

With music by Jim Wise and a book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller, Peters originated the role of the musical's sweet and spunky ingénue, Ruby, in 1966, in a one-act Off-Off Broadway production at Greenwich Village's historic Caffe Cino. Two years later she made a big splash on Broadway in GEORGE M!, playing Josie Cohan, the little sister of Joel Grey's George M. Cohan.

She then returned to Ruby when a two act version of Dames at Sea opened Off-Broadway at the Bouwerie Lane Theatre in December of 1968. The next year that production moved to the Theatre De Lys (now the Lucille Lortell), where this photo was taken.

DAMES AT SEA is a tap-happy celebration of the golden era of movie musicals with a heart as big as the ocean! Directed and choreographed by the three-time Tony Award-nominated choreographer Randy Skinner (42ND STREET, IRVING BERLIN'S WHITE CHRISTMAS), this gem of a show has been reimagined for the bright lights of Broadway and taken to glamorous and spectacular new heights! Featuring rollicking tap dancing, love at first sight, joyful music and a boatload of laughs, this glittering musical extravaganza has everything you need for an unforgettable night at the theatre.
