On Valentine's Day, Something or Other Publishing will release "The Hardness of the Heart," Wade Fransson's follow-up to his best-selling memoir, "The People of the Sign." Whereas the first volume took readers inside an international kidnapping and a religious "cult," the follow-up shifts focus toward the equally fascinating and destructive dysfunction inside America's high-powered corporate offices.

"The Hardness of the Heart" picks up Fransson's tale in the wake of the implosion of the Worldwide Church of God, a controversial religion in which he had served as a high-ranking minister. As he attempts to re-discover his spiritual footing and save his failing marriage, Fransson embarks on a new career. After scratching together a start in software development, he quickly works his way up to a lucrative and influential position with Deloitte Consulting.

Not long after hitting his stride with Deloitte, Fransson is confronted with the reality of what it means to "play ball" when multi-million dollar engagements are at stake. When doing right by the client means a smaller bottom line for his company, Fransson is forced to choose between taking an ethical stand and staying quiet-with his financial security and marriage hanging in the balance.

The frank revelations inside "The Hardness of the Heart" comprise a pertinent, if sobering, addition to the ongoing national conversation about corporate greed and its aftermath. Fransson's story adds firsthand insight to help readers better understand the origins of many of today's headlines: AOL CEO Tim Armstrong's controversial comments about his company's 401(k) plan cutbacks, Sam Polk's op-ed about wealth addiction, and the success of Martin Scorsese's Oscar-nominated "The Wolf of Wall Street," to name a few.

Fransson's perspective is particularly telling, as his next stop after things fall apart at Deloitte is as VP of Strategic Planning for Countrywide Financial, which would go on to serve as ground zero for the financial storm that led to the Great Recession of 2008. This turbulence all plays out in the context of the author's journey into the heart of spiritual and marital darkness, from locations as diverse as the gleaming skyscrapers of downtown Los Angeles and the squalor of an "AIDS village" in rural India.
