Spottiswoode & His Enemies Play Four Shows at The Living Room, Now thru 10/26

Spottiswoode & His Enemies, the cult septet who recently celebrated their 15th anniversary by winning two Independent Music Awards for their recent album Wild Goosechase Expedition, will play a 4-show residency this fall at The Living Room. It will be their first New York performances since April and their last before the release of their sixth album, English Dream, next year (spring 2014).

The band, led by its prolific English songwriter/frontman, Spottiswoode, have played many memorable New York residencies in the past. Their first was at Coney Island High, the former punk venue on St. Marks. They then played several at the old Fez on Lafayette including a famous gospel series featuring a trio of backing divas. After that there was the forty song cycle at Joe's Pub, and then more residencies at the Living Room, both at its original location on Allen Street and also more recently at Ludlow Street.

As usual, Spottiswoode & His Enemies promise very different sets of songs. "We're not being clever," said Spottiswoode, "we just want to fully express ourselves!" With a massive songbook and seven multi-instrumentalists that isn't easy.

Sunday, September 29th 9pm: Lounge/Cabaret set featuring the whole band including Candace DeBartolo on saxophone.

Saturday, October 5th 11pm: Late-night Double set of Greatest Hits played as a sextet

Monday, October 14th (Columbus Day) 8pm: Americana set featuring the whole band

Saturday, October 26th 9pm: The band is honored to be included on the bill for the Living Room's last night and will play a nostalgic set of original songs about the East Village and its characters. They'll be joined by the remarkable Martha Redbone (on vocals) as well as the virtuosic Kenny White on piano filling in for band regular, Tony Lauria.

WNYC's John Schaefer describes him as "one of New York's more colorful band leaders for more than a decade." For the past fifteen years, the Englishman has been the frontman of Spottiswoode & His Enemies, a septet that has become a New York institution. With the band, Spottiswoode has released five acclaimed CDs and toured worldwide from SXSW and Lille Europe to Lincoln Center. They have been profiled on NPR's Weekend Edition and featured on nationally syndicated radio programs such as XM Loft and World Cafe with David Dye.

Spottiswoode's songs have been covered by numerous artists and featured in a variety of television shows and films (She's Out Of My League, The Ledge, Tart, Bridget), as well as in his own short film, The Gentleman, which he wrote, directed and scored, and which played for several years on the Independent Film Channel. His gothic rock opera, Above Hell's Kitchen, was presented to sold-out crowds at the prestigious New York Musical Theatre Festival in 2010.

In 2012, Spottiswoode & His Enemies won 2 Independent Music Awards for their fifth record,Wild Goosechase Expedition, a critically hailed "miracle" (popdose) about a rock band's doomed wartime tour. Awards included Best Adult Contemporary Song (for the piano ballad, Chariot) and the Vox Populi Award for Best Eclectic Album. Ironically, Spottiswoode has always bristled at that particular description of the band's music. "We are expressionists!" he pleads. Yes, his songs travel the gamut from raw rock and roll anthems, confessional jazz ballads and gospelinflected hymns to vaudevillian ditties. Yes, he has drawn comparisons to Leonard Cohen, Ray Davies, Tom Waits and Nick Cave. And yes, His Enemies are comfortable in a multitude of musical genres and always happy to switch gears and instruments. WXPN's Dan Reed concurs: "They do something that few bands can do: evoke real emotions, sometimes several different ones in a single song." Paste Magazine describes the live show as "nothing short of transportive!"
