A VERY BALTHROP VALENTINE'S DAY

Sunday, February 14 at 7:00 PM

It's the sweet, sweet season of manufactured love. Well, the fine folks of Balthrop, Alabama list love as one of their top three exports (the other two being "obituaries" and "milk from the Whitehall Dairy")! To celebrate Cupid's big day, we've asked everyone in the band to come up with a new song or a favorite forgotten standard sure to melt the heart and pucker the lips of the oNe You've set your eye on. Town Drawer, Toxey Goodwater (Michael Arthur), will be accompanying the band on the big screen, drawing images of romance and heartache, a Valentine's Day musical Chalk Talk that will warm your cockles and bedazzle your eyes!

Michael Arthur is the archival artist of Joe's Pub, drawing the performers during their sets and sound-checks. Michael uses no pencils and no rough drafts in his work; each drawing is a live reaction to the moment.

For the last couple of years, Michael has been resurrecting and reconceiving the Vaudeville Talk and Chalk, his drawing pad, hand and pen projected live behind musicians and dancers, creating a visual accompaniment and backdrop to the music. He has performed with the Indianapolis Symphony in Indiana and Buglisi Dance Theater at The Joyce Theater.

"Michael Arthur is one of the most talented young artists I've ever met. . . .He makes wonderful drawings."-- Al Hirschfeld

In 2006, Alabama-born songwriter-siblings Pascal and Lauren Balthrop moved to New York City to start a band and ended up founding a town. Balthrop, Alabama, population 11 or so, is their bustling folk rock township.

Musically, the band straddles the fine line between antebellum and antifolk, reconstructing indie pop with songs of love, dead people, and dead people in love. One fan described the town's genre as "barnyard epic indie rock." In 2007, they released their double-album debut, Your Big Plans and Our Little Town, on the nascent End Up label, followed by a series of EPs: the rebellious God Loves My Country and the companion records Subway Songs and Cowboy Songs. The town is doing its third national tour this summer. A full list of tour dates can be found on the band's website. $15

FEDERICO AUBELE
Sunday, February 14 at 9:30 PM
"Brings Nostalgia plus a warm spanish guitar to his cool electronica" ---LA Times "Best Of 2007"

"The ultimate latin lounge record of the Year" --- New York Post "Best Of 2007"

"An album that translates the music of the Americas for a modern generation" ---New Times

"It's such a vast and huge theme, love. You can approach it in different ways," reflects Buenos Aires-born songwriter and guitarist Federico Aubele, whose new album Amatoria was released in the spring of 2009. "Love is such an important thing for every human being, whether we notice it or not. We all experience it at least once in life. It's one of the few things, along with dying, that is guaranteed to happen to you."

Way back in 1 BC, the original Latin lover wrote the Western world's first guide to picking up women Roman-style, Ars Amatoria, the Art of Love. Fast forward two millennia, when Aubele is swiping pages from Ovid's playbook, by way of smoky tango bars and the sultry heyday of Mexican boleros in the 1940s, and falling hard into the acoustic yet lush Amatoria. In fine Pan-American style, the final impetus for the album came thanks to an all-love-song compilation of classic Johnny Cash. $16 in advance $19 at the door

THE SWEET REMAINS

Monday, February 15 at 7:30 PM

"It's been a long time since 3-part harmonies this lush were yoked to songs this melodically gorgeous." -Boston Herald

When the three singer-songwriters, Rich Price, Greg Naughton & Brian Chartrand came together in 2007 for a chance jam-session, they discovered a little bit of magic that -- despite their geographical differences and solo-careers -- was hard to ignore... With lush three-part harmonies and strong lyrical song-writing, The Sweet Remains (and their debut CD, "Laurel & Sunset") was officially born in 2009 and quickly garnered comparisons to earlier folk-rock "super-groups" like Crosby, Stills & Nash, the Eagles, etc. And while these influences are joyously celebrated in TSR's sound -- along with those of more current emissaries of the "singer-songwriter" genre, like Ray Lamontagne, or John Mayer -- the songs, harmonies and personalities that comprise this new "super-group" are uniquely their own. In an age of solo-artists and bands driven by single-writers, The Sweet Remains is an authentic and exciting new force on the scene, inspiring USA Today and others to hail them as a new artist to watch. Or as Metromix put it: "If you have a chance to see these guys live, do!" $12 in advance, $15 at the door

KOBERET

Monday, February 15 at 11:30 PM

On February 15, one time Tony-eligible actor Andrew Kober of Broadway's Hair makes his New York solo debut at Joe's Pub. As previously seen by approximately 100 Ohioans in the auditorium of Shaker Heights High, this updated Koberet is an even more self-indulgent version of the phenomenon that took the Midwest by storm eight years ago. In it, Broadway's most famous hetero drag queen muses on his life so far...because no one else will.

The concert will be directed by David Ruttura with musical direction by Matt Hinkley, both of whom really had nothing else going on in February. It is being produced by jokr productions (Joey Oliva & Katie Riegel) and Noah Cornman.

On reviving the show for his huge New York fan base Andrew says, "Don't worry - there won't be too many show tunes. And my mom, Olga, would be thrilled if you bought tickets... but you don't have to." And the producers want you to know that it will feature a really spectacular and rockin' encore. You'll definitely want to stay until the end. $15

IMANI UZURI

Tuesday, February 16 at 7:30 PM

Imani Uzuri, eclectic and dynamic, is often compared to artists like Grace Jones and Nina Simone as one who defies category. Featured at numerous international venues, this bohemian spirit "... never fails to mesmerize audiences with her narcotic blend of...ethereal sounds." (Time Out New York). UZURI has collaborated and recorded with the likes of Herbie Hancock, John Legend, 4-Hero, Talib Kweli, King Britt and Sly and Robbie. Television appearances include performing with Peter Gabriel on David Letterman. $15
