Howard Scott Gallery is pleased to announce the opening of recent paintings by artist Robin Rose on Thursday, April 17. The forthcoming exhibition will be the artist's eighth one-person show with the gallery. The exhibit will run through May 31, 2014. A reception for the artist will be held Thursday, April 17 from 6:00-8:00pm.

Rose's abiding interest in painting is to explore the transformation of materials to an enigmatic platform. He uses the floating panels on which he paints to draw the eye into discourse. In Resemblance he is particularly interested in evoking comparisons to the organic and inorganic micro- and macro-systems in our visual ken. They suggest the question, "Is this stone or bone? Other worldly or anthropological?" Rose is interested in guiding the eye slowly into the question of source, of prime movers. The layered surfaces glow or seem inordinately wet or dry. The paintings seem released from gravity, either too heavy or too light, both the subject and object of the resemblance. He offers the panels as an investigation of covert visual mysteries hidden in plain sight.

Rose paints with encaustic on linen mounted on aluminum panels. He has long been known for inventing his own iconic use of these materials. In this show he has introduced acrylic polymer and ground pigment as a medium. When asked about his work Rose always answers, "I want to reach consistency and continuity in each painting. I paint one painting at a time; I create a unique technology for each one. I am looking for The Painting, not a painting."

Robin Rose lives and works in Washington, DC. His work is in the collection of the Hirshhorn Museum, The Phillips Collection, The Corcoran Gallery of Art, and in private and corporate collections in Europe and the United States.
