Blue Note Jazz Club Announces Sept 2013 Shows - Cassandra Wilson, Joe Sample & More!

Blue Note Jazz Club, the iconic Greenwich Village jazz and blues venue that offers live musical performances every night of the week, is proud to announce an impressive roster of acts this September. Each performer is scheduled for two shows per night, 8:00 pm and 10:30 pm, unless otherwise noted. Doors open at 6:00 pm and reservations are strongly suggested. Tickets are $30 at the bar, $45 for table reservations unless otherwise noted.

Cassandra Wilson, a world-renowned vocalist, songwriter and producer with an extraordinary following. Her development can be tracked through her discography, from the standards on Blue Skies (1988), to the GRAMMY-winning New Moon Daughter (1995), to Silver Pony (2010), produced by Wilson and John Fischbach and featuring a mix of jazz and pop classics, as well as songs newly written by Wilson and her band. Cassandra will be performing at Blue Note from September 5 - September 8. Tickets are $35 at the bar and $55 for table reservations.

Joe Sample, an integral, innovative and bestselling part of jazz history, takes the stage with the Creole Joe Band from September 10 - September 15. A founding member of the influential jazz funk combo The Crusaders (originally the Jazz Crusaders) and a pioneer of contemporary jazz piano, Sample reaches back to the primary sources of jazz and soul music to create his personal interpretations of classics by such esteemed composers as Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, the Gershwins, Al Jolson, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and others. While touring as a member of The Crusaders, Sample simultaneously launched a successful solo career. His bestselling recordings include Rainbow Seeker, Carmel, Voices in the Rain, Spellbound, and Ashes to Ashes. Sample has also toured and performed with numerous musical greats including Marvin Gaye, The Turner, BB King, Eric Clapton, Joe Cocker, Randy Crawford, and many others.

Come celebrate Gary Burton's 70th Birthday Tour at Blue Note from September 17 - September 22. Burton, a pioneer of the four-mallet technique of playing the vibes, is not only delivering his first studio album since 2005, but is also introducing his latest band, New Gary Burton Quartet. The group is comprised of guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Scott Colley and drummer Antonio Sanchez. Formed in 2010, the new quartet's first gig took place in August at the Red Sea Jazz festival and then took New York by storm with a weeklong, sold-out engagement at The Blue Note. With seven GRAMMY wins under his belt and his autobiography, "Learning to Listen: The Jazz Journey of Gary Burton," due out in September, Burton is continuing to contribute to both the music world and the jazz community as he maintains an incredible career. Be sure to come celebrate Burton's 70th birthday with special guest Terence Blanchard on the trumpet.

Closing out the month of September will be Chick Corea & the Vigil, featuring Chick Corea on the piano & keyboards, Hadrien Feraud, on the bass, Marcus Gilmore on the drums, Tim Garland, on saxes, flute, and bass clarinet, and Charles Altura on the guitar. They will be performing at Blue Note from September 24-September 29, with special opening acts on September 24 - September 25 by young impressario Gadi Lehavi, doors open at 6:00pm and the show starts at 6:30pm. Chick Corea, 20-time GRAMMY winner, prolific composer and undisputed keyboard virtuoso, is a living legend after four decades of unparalleled creativity and artistic output that is simply brilliant. Throughout his career Chick has touched on an astonishing number of musical bases, including, avant-garde, bebop to fusion, children's songs to chamber music, along with some far-reaching forays into symphonic works. From September 24-September 26 tickets will be $45 at the bar and $65 for a table reservation. Over the weekend, (September 27-September 28), tickets will be $45 at the bar and $75 for a table reservation.

There will be two performances every Monday in September. Doors will open at 6:00PM and the shows begin at 8:00pm and 10:30pm. Tickets are $10 at the bar and $15 table reservations.

- September 9- Tomas Doncker - CD Release Show: The Tomas Doncker Band is excited to take the stage at Blue Note to celebrate the True Groove and Global Soul CD Release. New York Native Tomas Doncker cut his teeth as a guitarist with such genre busting groups such as James Chance & The Contortions, Defunk and more. Doncker then went international touring and recording in Japan with jazz pianist Masabumi Kikuchi and producing studio and songwriting sessions with Boosty Collins, Yoko Ono just to name a few. Doncker's latest work as a singer/songwriter and producer embraces a broader musical vision that he likes to call "global soul," drawing influences from numerous sources, including East and West Africa and the Caribbean. Small World is the flagship release on his own label, True Groove Records and will be followed by Power of the Trinity, a meditation on the legacy of Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie, featuring numerous legendary Ethiopian performers. Come join the Tomas Doncker Band and the True Groove Global Soul Family for this multiple CD release and label launch extravaganza!

- September 16 - Jesse Fischer & Soul Cycle: Brooklyn based pianist/composer, is an exciting new voice in the jazz and soul music industry. Jesse has recorded six albums as a leader with his jazz/funk unit Soul Cycle, most recently the ObliqSound release Retro Future. He is known for his warm, soulful touch and bold, spacious compositions. As a keyboard player, he has performed with artists such as Stevie Wonder, FrEddie Jackson, Engelbert Humperdinck, Black Moon and is also featured playing on Anthony Hamilton's Grammy-nominated album Back to Love. Special guests include, Cinelu on percussion, Dayna Stephens on tenor saxophone and Lauren Desberg, vocals.

- September 23 - Alicia Olatuja: Presidential inauguration performer, Alicia Olatuja wowed everyone during her solo performance during the Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir's performance of "The Battle Hymm of the Republic." Ever since arriving to New York in 2005 her reputation has been sky rocketing. The most recent project Alicia has been working on is with her husband, bassist Michael Olatuja, in their band The Olatuja Project. The Olatuja Project, where Alicia sings in various African dialects such as Yoruba and Showna, recently released their debut album, the Promise. Simultaneously, Alicia has been working on an upcoming solo album, on which she will be joined by such acclaimed jazz artists as 3-time GRAMMY aware winner McBride and husband Michael Olatuja, Jon Cowherd and two-time GRAMMY nominee Christian Sands, Gregoire Maret, Ulysses Owens, Jr., and David Rosenthal. The CD titled, Timeless is slated for a release in June of this year, with a single, "In the Dark."

- September 30 - Sean Smith Quartet: For more than 20 years, Sean Smith has been an integral part of the international jazz scene. He has appeared in many of the major jazz festivals, concert halls and clubs all over the world. Sean has performed with Gerry Mulligan, Phill Woods and Benny Carter to name a few. In addition, Sean is a prolific composer whose works have been played and recorded by artists such as Phil Woods, Mark Murphy, Bill Charlap, Gene Bertoni, Leon Parker and Bill Mays. Sean's compositions are described as lyrical, melodic, cinematic and songful. Sean was a member of the Jacky Terrasson Trio and his work on Intro The Blue was nominated for a 2003 GRAMMY award.

Sunday Brunch at Blue Note

Every Sunday there will be two performances, one at 12:30pm and another following at 2:30pm at Blue Note from some of the most well known jazz artists. Tickets are $29.50 and include a live music performance, food and a cocktail.

Late Night Groove Series

Blue Note Jazz Club hosts two late night shows on Friday and Saturday nights. The doors open at 12:00am and the show begins at12:30am. Tickets are $10 both at the bar and at a table unless otherwise noted.
