Actress Jean Simmons Dead at 80

British Actress Jean Simmons has passed away at the age of 80 from lung cancer, the Los Angeles Times is reporting.

Jean Simmons was a prolific stage and film actress who acted opposite some of the greatest talents in the British and American cinema and stage. Simmons' film credits include the role of Ophelia in the 1948 'Hamlet' opposite Laurence Olivier (for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress), 'Caesar and Cleopatra', 'Great Expectations', 'The Happy Ending' (for which she received her second Academy Award nomination for Best Actress), 'The Actress', 'Spartacus', 'The Dawning', and 'The Robe'. Simmons also starred in the 1955 film classic 'Guys and Dolls' opposite Malron Brando and Frank Sinatra. For her role in 'Guys and Dolls', Simmons was nominated for a BAFTA for Best Actress, and won the Golden Globe for Best Musical/Comedy Actress. Later in her career, Simmons transitioned to the small screen, acting in series and television movies. She garnered an Emmy Award for her role in the 1980's television miniseries 'The Thorn Birds'. In 1964, Simmons toured the U.S. with a production of 'A Little Night Music', and went on to originate the role of Desiree Armfeldt in the West End.
