theatreWashington Seeks 2013 Helen Hayes Awards Judges; Deadline 10/5

theatreWashington is once again seeking individuals with a deep passion and knowledge of theatre to serve as judges for the Helen Hayes Awards. Each term is for three years, beginning with the 2013 judging cycle.

Please take a moment to consider your own qualitfications to serve as a judge, or to think about your colleagues and friends who might be potential candidates. This volunteer position requires time, consideration and dedication. It allows judges to experience the whole of Washington's dynamic and diverse theatre. It is a meaningful and rewarding responsibility which continues the on-going recognition of our region's world-class theatre in this Signature TheatreWashington program. Your recommendations gratefully help us meet these expectations for our community.

All applications are thoroughly vetted and reviewed by a Selection Committee comprised of, among others, three Artistic Directors from participating theatres. The Selection Committee evaluates every judge applicant against the defined criteria to which all Helen Hayes Awards judges must comply. These criteria include:

Artistic experience
Education
Evaluative, analytical, and inquisitive skills
Taste
Discernment
Attitude
Receptiveness to new experiences
An ability to articulate concepts
Real or perceived conflicts of interest
No affiliatiom with Helen Hayes Awards staff and/or Board
Varied exposure and life experiences
Evidence of personal responsibility
Previous participation at Washington theatres
Available time

In addition to the criteria and qualifications of individual candidates, consideration is given to the balance of the judging pool as a whole. We try to strike an even mix of theatre and arts professionals, academics, learned audience members, and journalists, in addition to other demographic information.
