A speed-dating meet-cute. Wedding dances. Bollywood jokes. Two people from the same culture; except not quite. One grew up in Britain. The other grew up in India. And slowly, everything they thought they shared starts to crack.
Are You Even Indian? is a dance-drama about love, marriage and belonging, written and performed by Mohit Mathur (Life of Pi, Wyndham's Theatre; Beyond Bollywood, London Palladium) and directed by Leigh Toney (Associate Director, Life of Pi West End; RSC's Measure for Measure; The Mirror and the Light, West End).
Set in a surreal courtroom we witness a marriage in freefall, the couple's choices of living a life together are put on trial. Which country is home? What language will their child speak? Who gets to decide what makes someone truly Indian? Dance drives the story; expressing what words alone cannot.
"A gripping, culturally insightful piece of dance theatre exploring the struggles, complexities and fluidity of coming to terms with one's identity." - Step Behind The Stage
Developed with support from ArtsAdmin, the show won Best Show at Bitesize Festival at Riverside Studios (July 2025) across three performances. It makes its Brighton Fringe debut this May - playing just two nights before Mathur takes his other critically acclaimed work Dial 1 for UK on the second UK Tour and international tour to Canada and India.
