Shobana Jeyasingh Dance to Return to Exeter Northcott Theatre, Nov 14-15
The internationally acclaimed Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company return to the Exeter Northcott Theatre with their new double bill: Strange Blooms & Configurations on Thurs 14 and Fri 15 November 2013.
Shobana Jeyasingh is renowned for dance creations of visceral energy and excellence as well as collaborations with outstanding composers. This autumn her company returns to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
In Strange Blooms, her new piece, Jeyasingh works with Gabriel Prokofiev, a classically-trained composer who revels in the latest technology. Together they remix early baroque music with all its exuberance, ornamentation and contrast.
This appears in double bill with Configurations, Jeyasingh's seminal 1988 piece celebrated for its exhilarating speed and stunning detail. Rhythmic patterns from classical Indian dance are deployed to create a remarkably contemporary work. Michael Nyman's original music (String Quartet No.2) will be played live on stage for these performances.
Strange Blooms is commissioned by Southbank Centre London and is performed as part of the 25th anniversary celebrations of Shobana Jeyasingh Dance.
"Configurations radiates a mysterious compelling authority, one of those works whose elements combine with complete inevitability and complete surprise."
