Shakespeare BASH'd, NOW Magazine Best Site-Specific Theatre Company of 2018 and favourite of Toronto theatre audiences, continues their biggest season yet with an all-star production of one of Shakespeare's best-loved and most complex works.
Directed by James Wallis (Co-Artistic Director of Shakespeare BASH'd, three seasons at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival) and starring E.B. Smith in the title role (Stratford Festival, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, The Grand Theatre), this production will explore Shakespeare's thrilling, passionate, racially-charged play. Smith welcomes the challenge of tackling the complicated Othello, "When I first climbed into the skin of this beautiful, troubled, trusting, loving, and vulnerable hero, I was immediately taken with his seemingly paradoxical complexity and straightforwardness."
Surrounding Smith is a cast of Shakespeare BASH'd veterans. James Graham (Shakespeare in High Park, Howland Company) plays the conniving Iago, and Shakespeare BASH'd Associate Artistic Director Catherine Rainville (A Company of Fools, Shakespeare by the Sea) will play Desdemona. Jennifer Dzialoszynski (Shaw Festival, Manitoba Theatre Centre) takes on Iago's beleaguered wife, Emilia.
Smith is excited to take on this seminal role with all its complexities. "I don't know that I will find definitive answers now. But every exploration sheds new light, gets me a little closer." He knows that Shakespeare BASH'd is the right company for him to explore this play, "they are some of the most careful, loving, and passionate stewards of this work that I have ever met, and they are not afraid to tackle so many of the difficult issues within this work that so impact our world today. This company provides a stellar cast, brilliant artistic leadership, and masterful text analysis. All the ingredients are right at our fingertips to make this production of Othello truly remarkable."
