Ramin Gray launches his Artistic Directorship of ATC with the UK premiere of Germany's most lauded and performed new play, in a bold co-production with The Drum Theatre Plymouth.

The Golden Dragon is one of those local Thai/Chinese/Vietnamese restaurants that are ubiquitous throughout every town and city in Europe. The whole world is there, in that one frenetic kitchen - everyone connected, everyone in a hurry, everyone looking for somewhere they can call a home.

Spiced with humour and tragedy, The Golden Dragon is a theatrical tale of modern life and migration. It charts a journey from far off China to your local takeaway and back and reveals what really goes into that bowl of hot and sour soup.

"If I could be something completely different from what I am. If I could be something completely different from what I have to be. Another person. If I could have one wish."
Before taking his post at ATC earlier this year, Ramin Gray was International Associate and Associate Director at The Royal Court Theatre from 2000-09, and has also directed for the RSC, Out of Joint, Liverpool Playhouse, Gate Theatre as well as major theatres across Europe and Russia.
Roland Schimmelpfennig is Germany's hottest contemporary playwright. Previous work performed in the UK includes Ramin Gray's production of Push Up at The Royal Court Theatre and ATC previously presented Arabian Night. In 2010, Schimmelpfennig was awarded the Mühlheimer Dramatists Award for The Golden Dragon. Schimmelpfennig also received the highest Playwriting Award in Germany, the Else-Lasker-Schüler-Prize, to honor his entire oeuvre.

THE DRUM THEATRE PLYMOUTH

The Drum Theatre produces and presents new plays. As part of the Theatre Royal Plymouth, it has built a national reputation for the quality of its programme and innovative work, winning the Peter Brook Empty Space Award in 2007. The Drum Theatre often collaborates with other leading theatres and companies, including, most recently, the Royal Court, ATC, Told by an Idiot, the Lyric Hammersmith, Frantic Assembly and the Belgian company, Ontoerend Goed.

In 2009 The Drum commissioned and produced Chris Goode's play about Edward Lear, King Pelican. They co-produced a new experiential work, Under the Influence, with Ontroerend Goed, for production in Plymouth and Ghent before touring internationally in 2010. Working with Told by an Idiot for the first time, they co-produced an adaptation of Michel Faber's The Fahrenheit Twins for national touring and a run at the Barbican Centre, London. The Drum has had major success with a new 'horror' play, Grand Guignol, commissioned from Kneehigh's writer and performer, Carl Grose and most recently they have co-produced DC Moore's The Empire with The Royal Court Theatre.
