For 8 (long and frustrating!) years in a row, performer/playwright GEmma Wilcox (from London, UK) has applied to the Toronto Fringe Festival Lottery, and NOT had her name drawn.

HOWEVER, this year, Wilcox - creator of Toronto Fringe hit shows The Honeymoon Period is Officially Over' (2008) and Shadows in Bloom (2009) - slowly but surely moved up and up the Toronto Fringe waiting list, until - POP! - *finally* making it off the waiting list and INTO THE 2017 FESTIVAL!!

19 TIME BEST-OF-FEST AWARD WINNER, GEmma Wilcox returns for her 3rd Toronto Fringe Festival with a sparkling new one-woman multi-character show, exploring the unexpected twists and turns of life, love and being on the road...

In 'Magical Mystery Detour', Wilcox plays 23 characters - Human, Furry, Feathered, Mythical and Steel!

It is a humorous, moving and highly original piece of solo physical theatre. It utilizes the main female character, Sandra, who many of the Toronto Fringe Festival audiences have come to know, although the show also stands clearly alone for those who have never seen any of Wilcox's previous fringe shows.

'Magical Mystery Detour' is set in the UK, in the summer of 2012. Prompted by a letter from her dead mother, the protagonist, Sandra, and her dog Solar, take an unexpected car journey from London to Land's End, Cornwall at a pivotal and sensitive time in her life. The audience travel with Sandra from the UK's capital and along sacrEd English countryside terrain, as she encounters magical, mysterious, archetypal characters and scenarios on the way. We journey with her as she struggles to accept the unplanned detours of life, love, and being on the road (that she *thought* she was on)...

This is a semi-autobiographical piece, heavily based on aspects of Wilcox's life. She wrote this show very shortly after the death of my mother and the ending of a very important love relationship. It was inspired by a journey through the sacred landscape in south-west of UK, and dealing with and letting go of her mother's death and the process of getting over a powerful love relationship. Ultimately this is about learning how to trust and surrender to the detours that happen in life, when we think our life is going in a certain direction, but then dramatically changes.

The show is also about how we can find and trust our own center, when those we love are not there any more, and when we feel lost or that life is too chaotic or not going the direction we want it to...

AND YES, The Beatles music weaves throughout the show's lively soundtrack, and there are many references to The Beatles throughout the show..
