New Line Theatre Hosts Auditions For EVITA 5/10

Auditions for New Line Theatre's more intimate, more rock and roll take on Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber's political potboiler EVITA will be held on two successive Monday nights, May 3 and 10, 2010, at 7:00 p.m. at the Washington University South Campus, 6501 Clayton Road (formerly CBC High School), just east of Big Bend, in the second floor theatre. New Line is looking for a multi-racial cast of 16 adult men and women. We will not cast anyone under 17. New Line is looking for intelligent singing actors who are willing to take risks onstage. Performers are asked to bring a prepared contemporary theatre song, with printed piano music for our pianist (no tapes and no a cappella). There will be a short dance audition. Performers may also be asked to sing from the score.

No roles in the show have been pre-cast. All roles will be cast through the auditions.

New Line may also be casting for their fall show, the jazz musical "I Love My Wife," at this time.

EVITA tells the somewhat fictionalized story of Eva Peron, from her roots in a small town through her meteoric rise to first lady of Argentina as wife to Juan Peron. Though Eva was a real historical figure, Tim Rice fashions her turbulent life into a fascinating, thrilling soap opera, a Shakespearean tragedy of intrigue, deception, betrayal, greed, and power, a kind of monstrous Cinderella tale mixed with Richard III. With EVITA, lyricist Tim Rice was his usual smartass, acerbic, cynical self, and Lloyd Webber wrote the most mature score of his career -- one he would never equal again. With this production, New Line will create a new, more intimate, more rock and roll EVITA. No violins and no giant chorus. Just sex, power, and rock and roll.

NEW AUDITION POLICY: If you have performed with New Line Theatre during the last eighteen months, you don't have to audition. Instead you just have to contact artistic director Scott Miller before the last night of auditions to tell him that you want to be considered. On the other hand, if you want to be considered for a role that's very different from what you've done for us before, then you are more than welcome to audition and show us how perfect you are for that role.

Rehearsals will begin in late May, on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 10:00 p.m., and also a few Sunday afternoons for choreography, plus every night the week the show opens. Rehearsals are at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in St. Louis Hills. Performances are at the Washington University South Campus Theatre, 6501 Clayton Road.
