because why not? theatre company is proud to announce the premiere theatrical production of "Fat," a play by Shannon Geier. Directed by Andrea Standby, "Fat" premieres at The Chapel on Friday, March 3 and runs through Sunday, March 11. Tickets are on sale now.

Amy Prestly has a lot going for her: a career, a happy marriage, a beautiful child, and wonderful friends. She is also overweight, a fact affecting not just Amy, but her relationships with everyone surrounding her. "Fat" explores the struggles that come with obesity and body image ideals, taking a realistic look at the societal messages communicated with regards to size and the challenges of balancing personal health with positive body image in a world where "thin" equals "better."

"Everyone recognizes the devastating effects alcoholism and drug addiction have on our society, but that's not what most people are dying from," said playwright Shannon Geier. "At the same time, obesity is one of the last bastions of disdain and ridicule. Sitcoms, movies, society as a whole, will still use the obese as comic relief in a way that would not be acceptable with any other group. How do you reconcile these conflicting messages?"

Director Andrea Standby adds, "We're falling down a slippery slope in the endless pursuit of mythic perfection."
