A performance of Verdi's Requiem that is a tripartite collaboration highlights the 2014-15 season of Kent Tritle, called 'New York's reigning choral conductor' by The New York Times. In an event emblematic of Kent's multiple roles in the city's choral life, he will conduct a performance of the massive work by the Oratorio Society of New York, of which he is Music Director, and the Symphony and Symphonic Chorus of the Manhattan School of Music, where he is Director of Choral Activities, in the grand space of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, where he is Director of Cathedral Music and Organist -- with a new choral configuration that features the more-than-250 singers on risers in the cathedral's Great Choir space.

The Rhode Island Philharmonic Orchestra kicks off Season 70, its 70th Anniversary season, with a celebratory performance at 8:00pm on Saturday September 20 at The Vets, 1 Avenue of the Arts in Providence. Music Director LARRY RACHLEFF – now in his 19thseason with the Orchestra – welcomes back violinist AUGUSTIN HADELICH for Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto, in a thrilling and diverse program including R. Strauss's Wiener Philharmoniker Fanfare, Prokofiev's Fifth Symphony and Adams' Short Ride in a Fast Machine. Resident Conductor FRANCISCO NOYA presents an informal talk about the program in the auditorium before the concert from 7:00?7:25 p.m. Tickets (starting at $15) are available at tickets.riphil.org, and the RIPO box office at 401.248.7000. When Haile Selassie, Emperor of Ethiopia, the man known as Ras Tafari, visited Jamaica on April 21, 1966, more than one hundred thousand Rastafarians were waiting at Kingston Airport to see the man they revered as the Messiah. For a brief moment, still celebrated by the faithful as Grounation Day, the two countries came together. 18 years later, in 1984, an Ethiopian Jewish family, members of the lost tribe of Israel, walked across the desert, making the long trek to their homeland. And now those three cultures – Jamaica, Ethiopia, and Israel - merge on the new album by Tel Aviv-based Zvuloon Dub System, called Anbessa Dub.

The Spirituals Project Choir is back for their second appearance at the Parker Arts, Culture and Events Center. Consisting of singers of all ages and backgrounds with varying degrees of musical experience, the Choir celebrates the varied traditions of spirituals (sacred songs created and first sung by enslaved Africans in America in the 18th and 19th centuries). In addition, the choir performs new arrangements - many written expressly for The Spirituals Project Choir - that provides an opportunity for people to connect personally with the spirituals through performance.
