Seattle Center Announces Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration, 5/6

By:

Seattle Center Festál: Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration, Sunday, May 6, 12 p.m. - 5 p.m., in The Armory/Center House, explores the cultural roots and contemporary influences of Asian Pacific Islanders through live performances, cultural displays, hands-on activities, youth artwork, and children's activities.

This annual festival launches Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month in Seattle with cultural dance performances, singing groups, youth drill teams, Taiko drums, API bands, local award winning FYA and Chinese Girls drill teams, and artists from around the state.

This year the celebration will feature two headliners, a blast from the 70s, Nine Lives and a hip reggae group Kore Ionz. Nine Lives was one of the hottest local bands in the 70s and these mostly University of Washington students performed at clubs all over Seattle. Kore Ionz is a young Hawaiian reggae group that is currently playing at local clubs, restaurants and special events.

There will also be displays from the API Women and Safety Center, K-12 Art contest winners, Asia Pacific Cultural Center, Wing Luke Asian Museum and over 15 information booths.

The 20 Seattle Center Festál cultural celebrations highlight The Common forms of tradition and expression among ethnic communities in the Pacific Northwest, while underscoring their unique creative contributions, customs, foods and ideals. Each event offers moving entertainment and fascinating insight into a different culture of the world.

Asian-Pacific Islander Heritage Month Celebration is part of The Next Fifty at Seattle Center in 2012. The Festival is produced by Asian-Pacific Directors Coalition in partnership with Seattle Center.
