EDINBURGH 2018: Review: TILDA SWINTON ANSWERS AN AD ON CRAIGLIST, Assembly

Walt (Byron Lane) is a man on the edge. His boyfriend Bobby has just left him and he decides to end it all. Then Tilda Swinton (Tom Lenk) turns up at Walt's apartment. She's responding to an advert Walt's ex posted on Craigslist for a roommate for their apartment and she thinks Walt would be perfect to study for her next big role.

Walt agrees to give her 20 minutes and then he's going to kill himself. Tilda Swinton is convinced that if she can accurately portray a character such as Walt she'll win that second Oscar.

Tilda Swinton Answers An Ad On Craigslist is so wonderfully and delightfully weird. Tom Lenk is completely deadpan as he delivers ludicrous anecdotes about Swinton's career. She is portrayed as an egotistical diva and Lenk can make the audience erupt with laughter with just a facial expression.

Byron Lane remains impressively straight-faced throughout Lenk's antics and gives an excellent performance as suicidal Walt.

Having previously been performed in Los Angeles and New York, I really appreciated the alterations that have been made for an Edinburgh audience. The stores, phone networks and energy suppliers referenced are all Scottish/British, which goes down really nicely with the crowd.

Tilda Swinton's costume is in the style of Tom Lenk's Instagram famous "Lenk lewk for less", where he creates replicas of red carpet outfits from whatever he has lying around. Tilda's entrance and exit costume is fashioned out of bubble wrap, which just adds to the hilarity of the situation.

Tilda Swinton Answers An Ad On Craigslist is definitely a unique Fringe show that has the audience in fits of laughter throughout.
