EDINBURGH 2018: BWW Q&A- Willy

BWW catches up with William Andrews about bringing Willy to the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about Willy.

Honestly it's been hard to condense what the show is about - predominantly it's about me trying to find my voice after such a long time away from live work. That makes it seem a touch dry no? It's not though, it's about delight, about kids and dogs and learning to be happy in yourself.

How long have you been away from the Fringe and why come back to it?

Nine years and I truly didn't think I'd ever come back - I'd given up on the idea completely. I honestly was thinking about training as plumber, or maybe an electrician (if they dropped the maths component...). I'm back I think simply because I have a show I want to share- and enough time has gone past where all the things that complicate the job have frankly fu**ed off into the distance. The work is what's fun for me -the pressure that surrounds it pees in the pudding.

Where might we have seen you before?

Under your bed last November, if you'd had the smarts to check. Hobbies aside, I've popped up on a lot a of things over the years; Alan Partridge, Him & Her - I had a healthy chunk as a Barrister in Broadchurch - you remember the seconds series - the one everyone said made no sense? Hiya!

Who would you recommend comes to see you?

Mums, Dads, extravagant Billionaires. I do have a rule actually - if I write a bit that only some people will understand, then I ditch it. I see nothing wrong at all with inclusivity.

Are there any other shows you're hoping to catch in Edinburgh?

Anna Crilly - (my human woman wife) has a play on called The Half. I'm yet to see it because someone has got to hold the baby, and we don't' quite trust the dog to do that. Not yet.

Willy is at Edinburgh Festival Fringe from 1st - 26th August (not Tues 14th)
