EDINBURGH 2018: BWW Q&A- Eli Matthewson Image

BWW catches up with Eli Matthewson to chat about bringing The Year of Magical F**king to the 2018 Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Tell us a bit about The Year of Magical F**king.

The Year of Magical F**king is all about my quest to give myself a late 20s sexual awakening. Thirty is approaching, and because I didn't think I'd ever been able to live my fully free and sexual truth I decided to try and fast-track myself. It didn't really work out. It's also about Disney's Frozen, my frightening Grindr addiction and how I definitely could have won X-Factor New Zealand.

What was the inspiration for the show?

There was a Time Magazine article about how millennials are having less sex than their parents did. Partially motivating, because I want to beat their stats, but also quite impairing, because it made me think about my parents having sex.

How has reception been so far?

This show has gone wonderfully! It was nominated for New Zealand's top comedy award, The Fred, and has had sell-out shows and great reviews at Comedy Festivals in Auckland, Wellington, Sydney, and Melbourne, and I was invited to be part of the program at the World Busker's Festival in Christchurch. My mum wasn't too keen on it though.

Who would you recommend comes to see The Year of Magical F**king?

Anyone who wants to hear the stories of someone's sexual self-destruction, so they don't have to have one themselves.

And who would you suggest maybe doesn't?

If you are a baker who doesn't want to make cakes for gay weddings, I'd recommend staying out. Also maybe if you slept with me once.

Eli Matthewson: The Year of Magical F*cking is at Underbelly George Square - The Wee Coo from 1st - 27th August
