Tell us a bit about Off The Top.

Off the Top is the scariest show I've ever done. Truly. The simplest way to describe it is an "improvised musical cabaret." In reality, that means that I walk on stage with absolutely no idea what's going to happen in the show and using audience suggestions pulled from a fishbowl I create a character, life story and an hour's worth of original songs, with an accompanist, all made up on the spot. By myself.

Why bring it to Edinburgh?

I've always wanted to perform at EdFringe. And what show could be easier to bring over? Aside from just me, it's just an accompanist and a fishbowl, both of which I'm picking up in Edinburgh, by the way (tip of the hat to John Thorne on piano!)

What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?

The fringe features so much variety... music, improv, comedy, theater, magic, stand up, one-man, high-wire acts... I like to think there's a little of all of those in this show.

Is it possible to prepare for a show that relies so heavily on audience input?

Yes, but not much. I can research and practice different song styles, or dig into what makes a good story in musical cabaret. And I can print out flyers. That's about it. But no matter how much I prepare, I doesn't stop me standing backstage before every show thinking, "This is either the most brilliant or stupidest idea you've ever come up with."

Who would you recommend comes to see you?

Everybody. Every. Single. Person. If you like music, comedy, improv and a magical theatrical experience, this is the show for you. If you like to watch a tightrope act where the performer could fall on his face at any given moment, this show's also for you. You never know! It's a once in a lifetime show, every show.
