EDINBURGH 2017: BWW Q&A- Binge Culture

Tell us a bit about Ancient Shrines and Half Truths...

It's an audio adventure disguised as a tourist guide. We lend you a mobile device and you explore a neighbourhood, getting an 'insiders guide' from a 'local'. You also interact in simple ways with performers and other audience members while in search of an authentic experience.

Why bring it to Edinburgh?

If we can do the show here, literally on the other side of the world from where it was made, we can do it anywhere. We've designed this show so it can be adapted easily to different cities - we find the same sort of objects to tell stories and lies about; like statues, benches, and buildings. You can find those in most cities. We know that audiences here are looking for shows that experiment with new forms while also being fun, and we think we have made a show like that.

What sets it apart from other shows at the Fringe?

The tourist guide angle, and the fact that its user directed. We give you the guide, you decide where to go - with a few surprises along the way.

We've tried really hard to avoid that earnest, breathy tone you sometimes get in audio experiences - we've worked to keep it direct, deadpan, and a bit sly.

The other thing is the sheer amount of stuff there is to do in the show. Each audience member will experience maybe half of what we've created, because of the pick-a-path system. You'll be able to talk to your friends afterward and compare notes.

Who would you recommend comes to see you?

Anyone who pukes a little at air BnB's promise that you deserve to 'belong anywhere', anyone who likes travelling, anyone who wants to see theatre and enjoy a summer afternoon at the same time.

Binge Culture: Ancient Shrines and Half Truths is at Summerhall (venue 26), 2nd - 27th August (not 7th, 14th, 21st) https://tickets.edfringe.com/whats-on/ancient-shrines-and-half-truths
