Based on the much-loved book by Raymond Briggs, The Birmingham Repertory Theatre present their production of The Snowman.

This staging is a little more colourful than the original book and film. The Boy builds his snowman who comes to life and together they explore houses and cause mischief. One particularly entertaining scene is when gigantic fruit emerges from the fridge to join the pair in a limbo party. The production is a visual treat as the sets and costumes are all stunning.

The closing of Act 1 was definitely the high point for me as The Snowman and The Boy take to the sky for "Walking In The Air". Although in my advanced age I'm fairly sure that there wasn't real magic at work here, I really couldn't see the wires..

One of the most delightful things about the show was hearing the sheer delight from the children in the audience. Santa's entrance in Act 2 was made all the more special hearing a small voice shriek "IT'S SANTAAA" from the stalls. During the scene when the Snowman was dressing up in adult's clothes, it was more the uncontrollable giggles from the children making the adults laugh than the action onstage.

What makes this production particularly enchanting is that it manages to clearly tell the story of Raymond Briggs' The Snowman with no need for words. The narrative is entirely visual and told through dance and special effects.

The timings of The Snowman reflect that the production is aimed at families and young children (the 'late' finishes are 8.45pm and most of the performances are in the afternoon) but this timeless classic will appeal to all ages.

The Snowman is at the Theatre Royal, Glasgow until Saturday 19th November.
