Contra Costa County's only professional orchestra, California Symphony, presents its spring concert Novacek Plays Rach 3, featuring guest conductor Alastair Willis, whowill conduct a program including Ruslan und Ludmilla Overture by Mikhail Ivanovich Glinka, Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra,and Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 3 featuring internationally renowned pianist John Novacek. The Music Institute of Chicago, now in its 82nd year, hosts its annual gala Tuesday, May 1 at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago, 120 East Delaware Place. The oldest community music school in Illinois and one of the three largest community music schools in the nation, MIC is planning a celebratory evening highlighted by the presentation of the Dushkin Award to internationally acclaimed stage and film composer/lyricist Stephen Sondheim.

The New York Philharmonic will celebrate the Chinese New Year with a gala concert featuring Chinese and western orchestral music, Tuesday, January 24, 2012, at 7:30 p.m. Long Yu - artistic director and chief conductor of the China Philharmonic, music director of the Shanghai and Guanzhou Symphony Orchestras, and artistic director of the Beijing Music Festival - will make his Philharmonic debut.
