 American Composers Orchestra (ACO) and WWFM The Classical Network announce The ACO Experience, a new radio program hosted by Diane Guvenis that features live recordings of music by today's most talented and exciting composers. All works are performed by the American Composers Orchestra or by guest artists and ensembles participating in ACO concerts and ACO's 2011 and 2015 SONiC: Sounds of a New Century, nine-day citywide festivals in New York, each featuring music by more than 100 composers age 40 and under. Pianist, composer, and critic Jed Distler marks his 60th birthday with a recital on Thursday, December 8 (7 pm) as part of Symphony Space's STEINWAY SALON series, which Distler curates.

This year, it presents a trio of concerts featuring seasonal repertoire and contemporary arrangements of carols, including Handel's Messiah, the quintessential classical music highpoint of the Christmas season; Bach's Lobet den Herrn, alle Heiden, BWV 230, Gregg Smith's Twelve Days of Christmas; and Robert Parsons's Ave Maria, to name a few. Two of Boston's leading musical ensembles—the Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP) and Odyssey Opera—present Lowell Liebermann's opera The Picture of Dorian Gray (1995) in a semi-staged production. Conductor Gil Rose leads the acclaimed musicians of BMOP and Odyssey Opera's cast of stellar vocal soloists in Liebermann's version of Oscar Wilde's classic novel of philosophical horror. Boston's own Jon Jurgens, hailed as an “affable, open-throated Italian tenor” by Opera News, will perform the title role of Dorian Gray.

Although '27'--the opera by Ricky Ian Gordon and Royce Vavrek about the lives of Stein, Alice B. Toklas, and their circle of friends--had its world premiere at the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis (OTSL) in 2014, its upcoming performances at City Center in New York, on October 20-21, are a debut of a different color. As part of the 75th anniversary season of MasterVoices, formerly The Collegiate Chorale, 27 has had some interesting changes since the performances seen in St. Louis.

In addition, the New Juilliard Ensemble conducted by Joel Sachs will present his chamber symphony City of Shadows on October 1.
